On record? The recording is too noisy. Some kind of rumble. Piano sounds like
crap, which Richter obviously likes.

The performance is vintage Richter. Pondering, than showers of notes.

I'd prefer a better recording, and respect Richter's work, but I've overdosed
on it, and would prefer to go elsewhere that doesn't challenge me to listen
through a bad recording.

If I had my druthers, I'd listen to Rubenstein for these.

Nope. He played whatever instruments were available to
him provided by the concert halls where he performed.
He didn't travel with his own toys like ABM, Volodya or
Zimermann.

other works. Sometimes it works, sometimes
it doesn't. No one is perfect.

Dan, thanks for reminding me of this fabulous performance! I didn't know about this CMRR re-mastering - I need to compare it to the Praga disc that I have. Supraphon released the Etudes that were part of this same recital in much better sound than the Praga, but didn't include the Ballades.
