I sampled the opening and the finale. I wouldn't trust such a sampling for an authoritative judgment , but what I hear is disappointing. The opening- why drop the tempi when the rest of the orchestra comes in? Because he's flailing more, no doubt (shades of Eschenbach). Oslo is not really helping us judge- the recording is flat and the hall is nothing special.

As for the finale, it really turned me off seeing the glee on his face as his orchestra pretty much phoned it in- those timps are so criminally polite that I can't blame the recording engineers completely. Klaus either doesn't know what to reach for, can't hear what he's getting, or just doesn't know how to ask for rmore yet. I listened to a Brahms 4 with Klaus/Oslo the other day, the fourth movement, anyway, and was also unimpressed. Remind me why we think he's special? The Shostakovich 7 video wiht Frankfurt is pretty good. That's pre-fame Klaus.

Speaking of Frankfurt, compare the finale with Orozco-Estrada
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSBfEPAnDsY&ab_channel=hr-Sinfonieorchester%E2%80%93FrankfurtRadioSymphony
Listen to the percussion in the opening- just splendid - and the finale. Again,t he balances are fantastic, the hall just wonderful, and the timps are just fantastic. That's what I want in a Mahler 3.

So to answer your question, he's not Lenny for a second. He's the new Dudamel. Sorry, Gustavo.

But he looks good, doesn't he? ;-)

On second thought, he reminds me of Herbie
more than he does of Lenny. The only problem
is that he makes about as much music as a flat
tire.

Cheers
