I wasn't there. (Chances are I will never see Svetlanov live, because he died more than twenty years ago.)

Does Yuri Temirkanov count? ... Or should his Elgar encore at the London Proms, with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic in 1992, be sub-titled: "Have you ever seen conducting like this?" ...

Temirkanov is simply being expressive, the mark of a better conductor
and one that really knows the music. Conducting in my book doesn't
represent acting out the role of a metronome, which is how I see many of
the contemporary "stars" of the podium.

Or like Herbie der Kharajan -- who did in fact even less than a metronome.
