Hi, Pamela! What an exciting time to have lived there -- SF was still affordable, there was all the interesting social & cultural stuff going on. The still-unidentified Zodiac killer was in the midst of his spree.

My girlfriend in the late 90s loved Japan Center, so I got to know it about as well as a non-Japanese speaking person could.

If I'm not mistaken, the center opened in 1968.

With regard to John and Yoko's stay at the Miyako in 1972, I wonder if this was before or after their stay with the Chinese acupuncturist/herbalist Dr.. Hong in San Mateo.

There's some discussion about John, Yoko, and the Miyako in Rolling Stone's "The Private Years" article. Supposedly John and Yoko were ultra-skinny, afraid to leave their room, and unable to eat. If it's true, this would be prior to their cure -- with the aid of the Chinese doctor -- from methadone addiction.

It was one thing to visit SF and another to live there. Compared to NYC, SF was a cow town...it took me a while to adjust...

Hmm. My impression has always been that a lot of the east coast cultural figures migrated west in the 60s to be part of the SF and Berkeley scenes. I'm thinking of people like Ginsberg, Kerouac, Timothy Leary.

Harvey Milk also grew up in NY and headed west in the 60s.
