Given the enormous success of my posting about fortepianos and Beethoven
PCs, I thought it would be a good idea to follow it up with a posting
about period brass instruments :-)

You forgot the ophicleide, a must for the Symphonie Fantastique, with or without serpent.

The Grande symphonie funèbre et triomphale requires two!

I assume that's just the band version (no singing) and not the
orchestral (singing)?

I would have thought that it would be be much easier to sing over two ophicleides than being drowned out by two tubas.

For the Mendelssohn Wedding march with ophicleides, listen to Philippe Herrewege's recording of A Midsomer Night's Dream with L'Orchestre des Champs Elysees with Sandrine Piau. Even Boxed Set Bernie likes it ...

The string and vocal parts are in addition to the original band version
so it's the same ophicleide parts.

Hurwitz says it requires six, so he must not be looking at the same
score I saw on IMSLP.

I'm glad he thinks Dutoit is boring as I tried for years to learn the
piece from that recording but it didn't keep my attention. At least the
Wallace gets the first movement done in two thirds the time.
