Byron Janis, an American pianist renowned for his commanding performances of the Romantic repertory and for his discovery of manuscript copies of two Chopin waltzes, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 95.

He had a brilliant career before arthritis in his hands forced him from the stage, but he overcame the condition and returned to performing.

Coincidentally, I had just enjoyed hearing his 1951 "Tempest" on
Spotify, inspired by the Beethoven Op 31 thread.

Fww ( little), I have only radio broadcasts of a live Prokofieff # 3 with Ormandy/PO, 1963 , and a Mozart # 23,K.488, with Bernstein/NYPO,early '60s. Janis was certainly "direct". I actually liked the Mozart more. The Mozart is on a NYPO issued commemorative 5-cd set I have, "Bernstein Live " , the Prokofieff on an Archipel cd , mine an mp3 source I failed to note.
