Listening to it, makes me reconsider Schubert in my favourite-composers-ranking.. not connecting well with this composer tbh... I do prefer Haydn and Brahms over Schubert... the stuff I like most by, or find most inspiring of Schubert are probably "Die Nebensonnen" and "Der Leiermann" -- with the rest; the symphonies, the masses, the chamber music, the other songs I heard, the solo piano... I just don't really connect well...

Should probably listen more to Hamelin though...

The thing with Schubert for me is also... like, he finds a beautiful melody (as in D935 No.2) and then repeats it without end... Don't think much of this...

Horowitz had the right idea with his 1953 performance of D960. Keep things moving, don't linger, don't be repetitive.

Still far better than Bruckner who finds an
ugly motif and repeats it for 90+ minuutes.

Count your blessings while you can.

Sure.

--

Have to correct myself regarding rankings of composers; I'd rank Schubert way above Haydn, after listening some more to Haydn again - but still not one of my favourites.

Fav composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Brahms -- and after the break: Schoenberg, Webern and Berg (though I have to get more accustomed with the works of these guys).

I think if Mozart, Beethoven Bach and Brahms did not exist, I'd probably choose Schubert, Mahler and Haydn or sth... and maybe also Prokofiev, Scriabin, Ravel and Debussy -- and after the break: Messiaen, Boulez (who I might add to my favourite composers one day) and Xenakis (same).

Sorry only read it now, one day maybe, right now not so interested. Also, I don't seem to like horowitz that much (anymore).

Listen to D.887. To my ears it is the litmus test
for Schubert affinity or disaffinity, just as the
5th is the litmus test for Bruckner, or Chopin's
4th Ballade is the litmus test for Chopin. If one
does not connect to D.887 one is definitely not
Schubert material.

Happy Easter!

Sofronitsky is even better at keeping the
flow in D.960:
