Tonight's episode is titled "Two Dorky Magnets." In a way I'm more interested to see how this Matt/Frannie thing plays out than I am in who gets booted.

This episode had several WTF moments as far as I’m concerned.

At the start of the episode, we saw Matthew’s tribe get back to camp from the last TC. In a confessional Matthew claimed he played his SITD so no one would know where he stood. He said it was a strategic move. Does he really think no one saw him working with Brandon? Luckily for him Brandon was bent out of shape because Kane voted for him. I wish they had shown more of this because I don’t believe Kane bought Matthew’s bullshit story.

The title of the episode was uttered by Frannie. We saw her and Matt get closer—close enough for Matt to tell her that he lost his vote for the next two TCs. We also saw Claire tell Frannie to keep her distance as it was obvious she and Matt were getting too close. Matt said he would like to date Frannie. I hope he brings this up during the game so we can see his reaction when she tells him she identifies as queer. She might be bisexual, but I don’t think she is.

Carolyn looking for the key to her tribe’s birdcage was funny. That snake was big! If the snake had bit her I don’t think that search would have ended well for her.

Danny managed to get his tribe to let him go off on his own and he took advantage of it to find the key to their birdcage. I have a feeling he’s going to go far into the game. He was smart enough to put the pouch back in a state that made it seem like the cage had not been opened.

Carolyn found the key to her tribe’s birdcage but like an idiot ran back to camp leaving the cage open with no pouch in it. She realized her mistake and ran back. She was in such a panic however that she forgot to close the pouch. For some reason her tribemates never suspected it could be her despite the four of them being together while she was off alone. It’s strange that Carson and Sarah, who are both very smart, didn’t consider this possibility.

If this is true it’s a brilliant move by production. Apparently, the fake idols in the pouches match up with the real ones. The pairing is as follows:

Carolyn real -> Danny fake
Danny real -> Brandon fake
Brandon real -> Carolyn fake

IC/RC

The last part of the IC was interesting. Matthew who had his arm in a sling via medical took it off so he could do the snake puzzle. He said he built a replica out of plywood at home and practiced this challenge. He finished first and won immunity for his tribe. Why would he tell everyone he built a challenge? Now people will see him as a challenge threat.

Another strange thing about the IC/RC was that Claire was allowed to sit out two straight challenges. Did they change the rule?

Back at Camp

Sarah’s tribe finished last in the IC which might have been good for the episode. Carolyn’s one of the strangest players ever. Probably even more strange than Noura but funnier IMO. In the lead up to TC she was a possible target but at one point I thought we might get blindsided as Carson was playing both sides.

TC

TC wasn’t all that exciting. Carolyn didn’t play her HHI. Helen was voted out by a vote of 3–1. Helen voted for Carolyn. Sarah didn’t have a vote.

Overall, this was a much weaker episode than the premiere. I’m ready for Matthew to go and as far as I’m concerned, Matt’s on the wrong show. I like Frannie but am worried that Matt’s lusting after her is going to lead to her boot.

Apologies if this posts twice. My normal news reader decided it was not
going to allow posting, so I had to change. It seems the rule only applies
if the immunity and reward challenges are separate. If they are combined
(as they have been so far), there is no rule saying you can't do it.

They've had combined challenges for years and the rule always seems to have been enforced. Did Jeff address this in an interview?

Another WTF moment I forgot to mention was when Jeff said Helen was the third person voted out of the game. Who voted out Bruce? Medical?

The SITD was designed to be used as a last ditch attempt to save a player who knows that he/she is going to be voted out. Probst never
considered the possibility that players would use it as a means to avoid having to vote. Now that he has seen both Matthew and Jaime
use the SITD for such a purpose, he needs to remove it from the game in S45.. Every player, except for those who are prohibited from voting
due to game twists, must cast a vote. Declining to do so in order to conceal alliances or to stay in the good graces of one's tribe mates
cannot be an option.

Why was Lauren telling her tribe mates about her extra vote? Why would she want them to know about it, and even more
importantly, why would she reveal that she had deceived them upon her return from the hill climb in E01? Her behaviour
made no sense whatsoever.

> Matt said he would like to date Frannie. I hope he brings this up during the game so we can see his reaction when she tells him she identifies as queer.

It is possible that the editors are setting the audience up for some sort of surprise revelation later in the season. I have some concerns about how their
relationship story will be portrayed in the episodes that lie ahead. They both seem like really nice people, and if things become awkward for them at some
point, I hope that the edit will remain tasteful.

I agree about Danny. However, did none of his tribe mates watch S35? Survivor 101: Don't let one person spend hours alone looking for an advantage while everybody else
sits around a camp.

Yes. That whole sequence made no sense. In confessionals, Mr Yum Yum, Sarah, and Helen were each accused of having the contents of the bird cage
but, at least in the edit, Carolyn's name didn't really come up.

He said he built a replica out of plywood at home and practiced this challenge. He finished first and won immunity for his tribe. Why would he tell everyone he built a challenge?

Because he likes to brag about his achievements.

> In the lead up to TC she was a possible target but at one point I thought we might get blindsided as Carson was playing both sides.

He certainly was, and his explanation for his deception was really weird. A little devil and angel whispering in his ears? WTF?
If Purple Tribe goes back to TC, Sarah will have her vote back and may try to convince Mr Yum Yum and Carolyn that Carson
is unreliable and could betray either of them just as he betrayed his buddy, Helen.
> Overall, this was a much weaker episode than the premiere. I’m ready for Matthew to go and as far as I’m concerned, Matt’s on the wrong show. I like Frannie but am worried that Matt’s lusting after her is going to lead to her boot.

I like both Matt and Frannie as individuals, but, like you, am wondering how their relationship will play out in future episodes.

I don't know that it needs to removed but they do need to do something
so it isn't used that way again. Though I did note that this was the
first time someone used the SITD that way so maybe it won't be abused
in the future.

Why does anyone tell anyone about an advantage/HII they've got. It
seldom works out well for them as it usually just paints a target on
their back and yet people continue to do it.

What was stranger is they celebrated the fact that he was out there,
possibly looking for an idol/advantage. I get that they might not want
to expend all that energy, especially during the hotter part of the
day, but I wouldn't expect them to basically celebrate him out there
spending all that energy looking for something that would give HIM and
advantage over THEM.

I hope that was just a poor edit because the obvious person to
consider was the one that wasn't with them. Also Carolyn was the only
one to not open up their bag and show all of their contents. I did
like how we got Carson considering himself so smart with his skills at
spotting deception and listing off all the (false) ways he could tell
that Sarah was being deceptive. Guess he never heard that the guy that
came up with those methods basically made it up and then made a living
selling it to other law enforcement officers.

I get it as he's spent a lot of time preparing for this game and
likely didn't have any one in his normal life that shared the same
passion for the game. So now's his chance to celebrate his win and how
he managed to get that win with people who will understand why he's
excited. It's not the best move but I understand it.

I am hoping that it backfires on him. I would have thought Sarah and
Helen were much more likely to be loyal to Carson than Yam Yam and
Carolyn.

Yes, the whole sequence made such little sense that there surely had to be a lot of things that the viewers just didn't see.
Regarding the contents of Carolyn's bag, I had to laugh when Mr. Yum Yum vouched for the fact that Carolyn didn't have
an immunity necklace by stating that he had seen all her stuff spread out on the ground.

Absolutely! The problem was though that Sarah didn't have a vote. So, if Carson had voted for Carolyn, the final result would have been a 2-2 tie which would have
resulted in its own set of problems.

It wasn't enforced last season at the beginning, and I'm pretty sure it
wasn't in the previous season either. It may have been a Post-Covid change
along with all the other changes they made.

I doubt they even considered this possibility when they came up with the SITD twist. To me wasting your SITD at your first TC when you know you're safe is a major league dumbass move. I hope this move bites Matthew in the ass..

Thanks for mentioning this. I knew I had forgotten a dumb move. Don't forget she also thinks she has power over them because she told them about her extra vote. She needs a math lesson.

I agree that they both seem really nice which is why I don't see her doing anything to hurt him. But I have a feeling he's going to be devastated when he doesn't get what he wants. Frannie needs to stay focused on the game otherwise someone like Claire will take her out.

They were more concerned with conserving their energy. They could have at least taken turns shadowing him.

The edit left a lot to be desired this episode.

Seems that way. This is at least the second time he's done something to put the spotlight on himself. Maybe he has a bigger goal than winning Survivor.

That might be a tough task for Sarah as YY and Carolyn don't appear to very perceptive. Either that or they have a very tight alliance.

Survivor's not the show to have a showmance on. Other than Rob and Amber has one ever worked out game wise? We need a night scene at their camp to see if they're sleeping next to each other and if so, are the others noticing?

It's much older than that. Here's an article from 2010 where Jeff
explains the rule:

I recall that article now. With so many combined challenges I thought they had modified the rule. I can see sitting out of challenges becoming a strategy in S45.

What I don't understand was the players talking about the THIRD person
voted out. Seems to me one left by injury, two were voted out - so
what's this about 'the third person voted out' - we heard it both from
Jeff and at least one of the players (I wasn't playing extra-close
attention as to who)

Or am I mentally deranged and missed an episode somewhere?!?

I don't recall another player saying that. Jeff screwed up which is is why I sarcastically asked if it was medical who voted out Bruce.

And in life!

Do nothing, be ignorant and you'll advance for sure.

You then ask, naturally, can you be an overachiever at that,
even? And I'd say think we shouldn't underestimate people!

So true. With Survivor you'll also very likely escape blame if your tribe loses. You can also conserve your energy for the merge when you'll be forced to compete.

There was a time when sitting out of challenges was a good way toget

You mean like the pathos when Rudy went out at final 3 in season 1?

Heh, don't remember that or maybe didn't see it, even.

No, but anyway, society should make room for everyone, people
who want to do nothing, people who just want to talk about
doing things and never do anything, really, _and_ people who
want to do EVERYTHING and all the time and never say a word,
or talk endlessly about it for that matter, driving everyone
else crazy!

But in my experience, this isn't the case.

And yes, guess what personality type I am in that above
description. Three times, and the first two don't count!
