Kellyn means don't direct message them if you're going to say mean things. I don't get why people do that when they can tweet at them for the world to see. Does sending a private message make the hate hurt more? I'm surprised Carolyn's getting hated on. That's usually reserved for young female players such as Cassidy for some reason. I guess some people get off on ruining the self-esteem of these young women.

People shouldn't be mean on social media I suppose, but let's
take a statistical approach.

How many people watch the show? In how many countries is
it shown? And how many people additionally watch it online?

How many of those use the Internet to communicate?

All of them will obviously never behave, especially when
it's so easy to misbehave, if that's what is happening.

The players should be aware, if they participate, and have
public channels on various social media platforms, stats
indicate not everything people say will be pleasant to hear,
balanced, or even true.

I hate haters but no PSA will change reality, or reality
TV, even.

They expect game-related criticism. There's no reason why they should have to put up with nasty personal insults in their DMs. That often results in the player leaving social media which sucks for real fans and for the player..

in a bunch of 10 or so people, so it's totally unrealistic to

Anyone who has been on the Internet for any length of time should be
aware of that. Hell, I've made simple statements that shouldn't have
made anyone mad and yet I've gotten a few nasty responses. It seems
Twitter is especially bad for that sort of thing where there's always
going to be someone who is going to either be trolling or just have a
rotten out look on life that they want to spread around.

For someone who is going to have a huge number of people potentially
following their social media like a Survivor player the best thing
they can probably do if they want to be active on social media is just
use it to put out their Tweets or posts and never read the
DMs/responses. At least not until their season has been over for a
while unless they are willing to deal with the occasional troll.

Or they can do as a writer once said, I think it was
Theodore Sturgeon, when reading a review of a novel he'd just
published, he would continue reading but stop immediately when
the first negative thing came up :)

I guess to not ruin self-confidence and to start re-/overthink
something he was happy with at the time the script was
submitted and approved ...

The players brave enough to go on Twitter want to interact with fans and other players. We need to keep in mind that most of these people are just like us--huge fans of the show/game who were fortunate enough to also play the game. They want to talk about their experience and they want to do so when their season is being aired so it's more relatable for fans. Most of them expect to be criticized for game-related stuff. They love when they can give us extra insight as to why they did or didn't do something. Stuff like that is what fans love to hear as we all know the edits can be very misleading. A lot of players also expect to deal with haters but when they cross the line into strictly personal attacks that is something no one should have to deal with. IMO, crap like that negatively impacts the casting pool.

Brian, no one is saying haters are good - not on the internet,
not anywhere.

But it's reality, and the studio should warn the players
officially if they cannot figure it out themselves this is
possible, even likely to happen.

Other than that, unless someone can figure out a practical
solution - maybe an AI/spam script that detect this kind of
material, and discards those messages, or something like that
- how is it avoidable?

No one denies that they shouldn't have to deal with the hate, but it
is going to happen. If someone is prepared for it then by all means go
ahead and use social media as much as they want. For those that
aren't prepared and willing or able to deal with the hate I stand by
my recommendation to either get off of social media or don't read any
responses to posts that they make. No amount of pleading will stop the
'haters' from spreading their hate so the only options are to ignore
them or avoid them.

Really the only workable solution would be for CBS to provide a
platform for players to interact with fans that they moderate and
hence can keep the bad actors out. For those with money, like Jimmy
Johnson in his season, they could hire someone to filter out the bad
actors, but that's not most players. Though I suppose some web forums
might also work well if you can find some that are well moderated.
