Yes, there are still non-Google Usenet servers. For instance, the site
I post from is connected to a Usenet server cluster independent of Google.
Spammers aside, Usenet is so low-resource that it can be kept going with just
occasional "it's my hobby" people...and with Google divesting the place will
becomes a lot less attractive to spammers.

Dave Van Domelen, notes it's also possible to set up a mailing list
gateway for Usenet groups, kinda like an ancestor of RSS feeds.

I wish Google integrated these groups better with their email service better.
I will miss the access. Meanwhile, I just see that the Forte Agent
is still active as an email/newsreader client. Anyone here still use
the program as an email client or newsreader? I think it was the
best one out there, but I discontinued it after using a 64 bit PC
and Thunderbird.
