Thought I would make a test post on NovaBBS to see how it works. seems pretty usual.
You do have to register into NovaBBS and the login is a bit of a headache but otherwise everything seems fine.

I have no idea if this post will also be shared to google groups but if it is. NovaBBS might be a good replacement if actually posting the message isn't too much of a hassle.

Okay so turns out I made a mistake when registering for NovaBBS and now my NovaBBS display name is Swivebot, no L. If we do switch to NovaBBS keep in mind that we cannot in fact change that display name to my knowledge, I'll still sign as Swivelbot though.

The user interface is certainly different than I'm accustomed to (I've been posting through Google Groups for years now), but it's not unmanageable. I don't hate it.
