Of course they do - I even saw the Horse Guards on parade when I was
in London in 2016.

How anyone can feel slighted with 4 of their own bearing RCMP officers
leading the coronation horse parade is beyond me. Don't read anything
into the fact that the Royal Canadian Mint have said there will be no
Charles clins until 2024 - it's not a slight on Charles - they didn't
have a new image done by the coronation and it takes time to make and
engrave one then have it personally approved by the Crown - which is
one of the perks of being King or Queen - they get final approval on
their own images - it's not like American coins where George
Washington and others aren't able to approve their own images!

Our tradition is that living people do not appear on money, so getting
approval would be difficult.

Of course. 79 years ago we invaded France, after all, and I’m not
willing to bet that Putin is less mad than Hitler.

Creating such plans is a regular assignment for new staff officers so
they can learn _how_ to make operation plans.

It might be that it is not enough to be very satisified with your contingency planning. From https://www.parliament.uk/business/news/2020/january/statement-on-wuhan-coronavirus/ here is the relevant government spokesman when we were just hearing about something new coming out of Wuhan:

"The public can be assured that the whole of the UK is always well-prepared for these types of outbreaks and will remain vigilant and keep our response under constant review in the light of emerging scientific evidence."

A number of the following events, including a mad scramble to get protective equipment, suggests that we could have been better prepared.

About thirty years ago the Canadian war plans for a conflict with the US, written about 1930, were published.

The key phrase was:

"These plans were nothing if not ambitious"

I suspect some staff officer was ordered to draw up such a plan, sank a few whiskys, and
went to work.

Then they could tell the government "Yes, we have a plan". Box ticked.

I think I heard about those some mumble years ago. Weren't they
basically "stall and slow the Americans as best we can until the UK
sends help"?

It certainly is true that at the start of the pandemic, there weren't enough masks
to go around - indeed, there basically weren't any masks available!

However, all in all, in the UK, and indeed in Canada, that bland statement of
reassurance was at least *approximately* true.

In the United States, on the other hand, the response was basically sabotaged
by Donald Trump because he figured locking down the country for an epidemic
would hurt the economy - and good economic numbers favor a President
getting re-elected. (He sort of assumed the pandemic wouldn't be bad enough
to have serious consequences of its own.)

Of course, praising the response of the UK simply because of the unlikely event
of an administration in the U.S. that chose to do much worse isn't really logical...

We have not invaded Canada in a long time. Might be time now.

I was in northern Montana (Craig) a couple of weeks ago. The smoke was
pretty bad when we got there and then it dissipated over the next few days.

I am hoping that some useful information will come out of the covid inquiry just starting, but that is by no means guaranteed. The one thing the UK got right, the US (even Trump) also got right - vaccines ASAP (the US, of course, had a catchier name - Operation Warp Speed). Despite side effects now apparent, I am persuaded that this saved many many lives. In the UK this was one of a number of initiatives modelled on US venture capitalism - try a lot of ideas, each with small probability of success individually. "Test and Trace" does not appear to have been successful, unfortunately, as this could be very quickly repurposed for a different bug. I was a great fan of the use of modeling and simulation to direct policy, but it looks very much as if we don't know enough about assessing the reliability of its projections. Sweden appears to have done pretty well without government enforcement, because of what amounts to a widespread voluntary lockdown with similar costs and benefits. A recent (book length) discussion of this is at https://iea.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Perspectives-_1_Did-lockdowns-work__June_web.pdf)

As I recall the mission for the central army group (not that Canada had enough troops for an army group)
was to take St Louis. This inspired the key phrase.

That makes sense.

It was founded by the French, and grew after the Seven Years' War (aka
French & Indian War in the USA) by French settlers from Illinois. It
was then purchased from France along with the rest of (Western)
Louisiana (Eastern Louisiana had gone, with Canada, to Britain when
the Seven Years' War was settled).

So, for the French-Canadian population, at least, this would be taking
their own land back.
