How about Scavenger/Materials Reclamation Specialist? I seem to recall
post-apocalyptic settings where people specialized in finding/retrieving
resources - metal, for example - though of course, every specific
instance left my head when I started typing this note.

Hm - I guess Hell Tanner (Damnation Alley) was a type of postal worker.

A Manila rubbish dump where such live-in specialists have defined areas
to freely ply their talent for reward, but pre-apocalyptic.

Oh, my. So in a post-apocalyptic world, a return to traditional
sexual morality will be in order! At least according to Uncle
Fluffy's Post-Apocalytic Sing-Along.

Maybe this is why the right wing has picked Trump.

And it sounds like The Children's Crusade contains just the sort
of ironic and cynical take on things... that I would agree with, but
see no need to read while I search instead for escapist material
that will temporarily elevate my mood.

Of course, this reminds me. The future can't be like "If This Goes
On..." since while the U.S. could easily slide into religious dictatorship,
that would not lead to the rest of the world "getting along very well
without it"... instead, the rest of the world would be under the heel
of Russia and/or China without the U.S.. (Finding Trump to be an
existential threat makes it very easy to ignore the arguments of his
supporters.)

Replace Germany and Japan with Russia and China, and then works
like Fatherland or The Man in the High Castle describe what I see
as our current maximally probable future timeline. This needs to be
corrected.
