I just ran a "fully sapient robotic horse going by the name of 'Fess'"
loosely based on a science fiction story. Any ideas ?

I'm not sure what you're asking. If it's the SF story,
it's _The Wizard in Spite of Himself_ and sequels by Stasheff.
First novel quite amusing, but rest not worth it.

In Anthony Boucher's "The Quest for Saint Acquin" the protagonist rides
a robotic mount. IIRC it is an ass, and I've no idea of its name.

A quick skim turns up no name, only the phrase "the robass".

It occurs to me that I read this story in a collection by Mills, in
which the authors were invited to contribute their best stories. Or
what they thought were such.

Bester, of course said he had no best stories and contributed a segment
from his commonplace books - fragments of which showed up fifteen years
later in his 1970s novels.

I must still have a copy. Possibly even filed under M.
