I think the metal cans referrd to contain fruits and vegetables, not
processed mushrooms.

But, yes, there may be exceptions. Corned beef, for some reason (it's
been a /long/ time since I bought that), comes to mind.

Good point. I was entirely thinking about drink cans.

I remember a Rockford Files episode where a guy who was Rockford's
nemesis while they were in jail (maybe Isaac Hayes?) gets out years
after Rockford, and then shows up on his doorstep trying to intimidate
him into performing some task by crushing a soda can with his hand.

Rockford (approx): I don't know if you noticed since you got out, but
those are all aluminum now: Anybody can do that!

I missed the first episode in which Hayes' Gandolph "Gandy" Fitch was
introduced. Subsequent episodes gave me the impression he was mostly
a comedy relief character. Decades later, I finally saw Gandy's debut
episode, where he wants to be cleared of his wife's murder. He was
innocent, in a sense, but
he was such an abusive husband, and such a relentless stalker that
his wife decided the only escape was to kill herself in such a way
as to frame him for her murder.

Much darker than I expected.

Aluminum is mainly for cans of carbonated drinks, where
the pressure supports the structure against buckling.

If a regular food can is bulging with internal pressure.
don't consume the contents.

Cans with pop-tops, soup and such, are composite. The top is aluminum
and the body steel.

I'm not sure what you're describing.
In the UK, I get steel cans with and
without a ring-pull to take the whole
top off a can, and sometimes all aluminium.
For disposal, I test the ring and the lid
with a magnet. I think I haven't ever
found a mismatch, but I test. Then I
put a couple of lids inside a can of that
type, and squash and fold the top of the
can. Oh, after removing a paper wrapper -
by putting hot or boiling water in the
can, to melt glue. And then wash it -
after adding cold water. All this is
mostly to entertain myself, but my thought
with closing the can is to not have any
different recyclable material fall inside
the can.

A couple of old detextive stories struck me -
one where Lord Peter Wimsey consigned
a bottle to regular trash when it was no
longer required as evidence, and another
where a servant claimed that house policy
was to wash items before putting them in
regular trash, which usually makes no sense.
This suggested foul play. I do wash
food containers that don't recycle because
I don't want the trash in my kitchen
to have a foul smell.
