According to box office analyst Valliant Renegade, The Walt Disney Co. has
faced significant losses, nearing $900 million, on its last eight studio
releases. Titles like "The Little Mermaid" and "Guardians of the Galaxy"
haven't been able to deliver the expected results, adding to Disney's
economic woes. In fact, two of their recent films, "Strange World" and
"Lightyear," were outright flops.

Valliant Renegade highlighted an important aspect in a YouTube video,
saying: "One of the things that we always talk about here, that is the
perfect time to remind everybody, is that Disney consumes all of its own
content post-theatrical." This means that Disney no longer licenses their
content, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to third-party platforms such
as Netflix. As a result, they have lost out on billions of dollars' worth
of potential revenue from these contracts.

So, it's not just the box office losses that need to be considered; there
are also economic opportunity costs to take into account. If Disney had
pursued licensing deals with major streamers like Netflix or Amazon Prime,
or adopted a model similar to Universal's split Pay 1 window, they could
have generated much more revenue. However, Disney has chosen to keep their
content exclusively on Disney+ to support their own streaming platform.
