“Starlink Rival Astranis Debuts Next-Gen Satellite With 5x More Capacity”
https://www.pcmag.com/news/starlink-rival-astranis-debuts-next-gen-satellite-with-5x-more-capacity

“The new Omega satellite promises to offer more internet capacity while
keeping the costs low.”

Pretty soon, we are going to have million billion satellites rotating
around the planet from LEO to GEO.

BTW, I am using Starlink exclusively for my office building out in the
country now. Works great, I am getting 100/100 mbps out of it. Much
better than the AT&T DSL 12/1 mbps lines that I have multiplexed.

Sure. And one malfunctioning station-keeping thruster failure will
render space inaccessible.

12/1 DSL has been obsolete for a decade. Fiber is the way to go.

Only if you are in a town. I actually do have fiber at the front of my
14 acre office property but AT&T wants $550/month with a five year
contract for a 10/10 mbps connection. Or 1000/1000 mbps for
$1,500/month. They would have to pull off two fiber strands (out of the
32 strands), install a repeater, and run them a quarter mile back to my
office building. Not cheap.

How is it for teleconferencing? I've heard that the drop outs as it
switches between satellites are problematical.

We don't do much teleconferencing so I don't know. I do get dropouts
for Thunderbird when going to Usenet after an hour or so of inactivity.

BTW, I download the entirety of my main website every Friday to one of
my local fileservers over Starlink. It is a 31 GB download and takes a
couple hours for a couple of thousand files.

I think this is the answer to "Where are they?" The Berserkers, the
Inhibitors, all that lot, are trapped on their home planets by impenetrable
layers of communications satellites. At least they get to watch a lot
of smeerp videos.
