On Twitter today

#OnThisDay 1950: The BBC revealed the huge efforts it was making to
bring television service to the southwest of the country. This involved
the use of bus-sized balloons.

Glorious! I like the decidedly home-made dipole and anemometer, the
determination of driving trucks through fields, and of course the
accent.

I don't think there were many Band I antenna on sale!

The vehicles looked ex-military or at least military spec and most of
the people would have been in the forces.

Not much site surveying now but they had off-road vehicles in past -
Forward Control Land Rover, Unimog. As well as the Land Rovers etc.

A 144 MHz yagi fitted on the Research Dept pump up mast well!

One of their Forward Control Land Rovers lost a half-shaft on the steep
Torosay track! Poor chap had to sit there with foot on the brake until
help arrived.

I did wonder - what was in the balloon? Helium? Town gas? And either
way, did they recover it (the gas) when finished with it (the balloon)?

I would have thought Hydrogen, Helium would be expensive.
