A controversial barge that will house hundreds of asylum seekers is not a "death trap", a government minister says after fresh safety checks delayed the arrival of its first inhabitants.

Cabinet minister Grant Shapps told reporters there was no reason why the barge "wouldn't be absolutely safe".

"It certainly won't be a death trap," Mr Shapps said.

Housing twice the number it was intended to house, in cramped conditions, with limited escape routes, and no life jackets on board, would seem good enough grounds to worry that it could potentially become a death trap.

I am sure Shapps would have argued that Grenfell Tower was entirely safe.

I guess we'll find out if a detainee lights a fire in the dead of night, anti-migrants firebomb it, or there's an electrical fault.
