To put in context
1.5 million sq km is *** 3 TIMES*** the area of France or half of India
which is no longer reflecting sunlight back into space, having switched
global functionality to the opposite of dark sea as a solar collector of
heat. Tipping point anyone?

Maybe plateauing like wrt previous on this day plateaued minimum in
1986, in the next week it may jump to 2 million , because of the 1986 track.
Continuing record minimum Antarctic sea-ice , on this day, of any year

I wonder if this will be such an outlier of a record, that it will be like the 2012 record low for the Arctic that led to all sorts of wild predictions about the future from people who should have known better. Both Arctic and Antarctic ice will continue to disappear as AGW advances, of that, there is no doubt, but it will never be a linear process. Factors have to line up for new lows to happen.

If due to weather , so stochastic, like for Greenland, its difficult to
know what is in bounds for the area. It all started going wrong around
Antartica well before El Nino got going , not changing rate of sea-ice
decline since, so guessing little to do with ENSO.

For 2012 Arctic, the preceeding maximum was normal and the following
minimum a serious outlier.
For 2023 Antarctic, the preceeding minimum was normal and the putative
following maximum is becoming a serious outlier, the inverse

Maybe topping out for the year, having gained only 13,000 sq km over the

Looks like Antarctic sea ice has peaked having gained 2,000 sq km, ie
error-bar territory, over the previous day, so 671,000 sq km less than
the previous minimum peak on any 10 Sep of the satellite era, presumably
even less than the minimum peak of any year.

Going by Charctic and if 1986 was the previous minimum sea-ice peak,
then the 2023 peak (unless exceeded in the next few weeks) was 2 days
ago 10 Sep at 1.03 million sq km less and 11 days earlier than that
previous lowest peak of 21 Sep 1986.
So for the last austral autumn and winter an area of about 3 times that
of France has been absorbing heat into the Antarctic waters compared to
normal, instead of reflecting off the ice into space, a tipping-point
anyone?
