I am not such a connoisseur of kilt-wearers' knees as you two young ladies are, but I agree that Ms Mordaunt had scrubbed up well.

I have not seen any of the event(s) referred to above (which of course,
means, in UMRA, that I am more than qualified to comment on them) so I
would just like to mention that men wear Kilts and ladies wear Kilted
Skirts. THBAPSAFAWDAK.

A kilted skirt as made by my mother for me, had flat overlapping panels on
the front. Held closed at the top with a little bit of leather belt on the
outer edge on the left into a buckle, probably recycled from a shoe, and a
popper on the inside. On the lower left the flap had a kilt pin. The back
of the skirt was pleated (easy to do on a small tartan weave) into a
waistband. It was rather splendid in Lord of the Isles.

The ladies version is a wrap round skirt. I have (may have disposed of it
recently as it hasn’t fitted for many years ) a skirt made to measure in
the McMillan clan colours, and it needed a big safety pin to keep me decent
or a breeze would have revealed what ladies wear under “kilts”.

That's interesting. I didn't realise that kilted skirts are "back to
front" from kilts, where the open edge of the apron, and the kilt pin,
are on the wearer's right.

I got my (second) kilt when I was 13. My mother, with an eye to the
future, and economy, specified large hems top and bottom. The tartan -
no prizes for guessing which - had to be woven specially. I last wore
it when I was 37, after which point it unaccountably shrank around the
waist. My nephew now has it.

Perfect description Penny. Mine was the McMillan dress tartan: sunshine
yellow, maroon and dark green. No way was I wearing the hunting tartan.
McT also had a fetching orange and yellow tie. I think we long since sent
the ties packing as he so rarely wears a smart shirt.

The book I have on tartans is scarce now. Let’s see if I can find the
tartans on line.

Oh, I may have got the left and right confused (it was a long time ago and
I can't find a photo). But given that clothes for males and females usually
button on opposite sides, I could be right.

Wise (and frugal) woman, though large hems on a pleated garment would be
very bulky. I didn't think kilts had much of a hem at all.

My mother bought he tweed from somewhere in the Hebrides.

I had a McM&S tartan. It was soft greenish and I had the kilt and a
jacket in similar but plain green. A bit bomber jacket style. I had it
when the daughters went to City of London Girls school as I had to go
to parents' evenings. I felt I should look very respectable. I
wandered round looking for the first child's teachers and asked one
lady who she was and she was the head.

9 years later (2 years between daughters) second child got her A level
certificates from ..I forget which celebrity..ina greenish suit of
similar green.

You are right. I had one just like that. In fact, I was wearing it the
day I went to Grannie's house for a piano lesson with my aunt and
Grannie said "I hear your mother has Auntie Kai coming for elevenses
this morning. Let me see if what you are wearing is suitable." It was
deemed so. I went home, burst in on Mum and Auntie Kai in the lounge
and said "Guess what Grannie said! ..." Auntie Kai said "think it's
very suitable, dear." I bet my mother was mortified.

Is it quite small with a blue cover? I remember the one my parents had,

are pictures of him in both kilt and trews - not at the same time!

McM&S. Are you talking about the clan of St Michael or am I missing something here?

Lord of the Isles is various shades of green. My mother seemed to think it
was suitable given my heritage - lots of Campbells on her side. Which is
odd, because I just looked it up and MacDonald was mentioned. Maybe she
referred to the paternal line.

Not something I've ever looked into - isn't it largely Victorian fakery and
tourist conning?

So, [1] if someone with XX chromosomes got hold of a kilt, and dared to
slip into it... does the kilt undergo some radical change in its nature,
becoming a 'Kilted Skirt'?

How about if some gender-fluid individual grappled with the garment?

It's all too too terribly complicated.

[1] Don't you just hate it when someone starts a sentence with "So,..."?

But it is not as bad as starting a sentence with ‘But’.
And I think starting a sentence with ‘And’ is a poor show too.
