My understanding - hazy though it is (meaning I haven't checked
anything; that's normal here, isn't it), from half-hearing something
probably on the BBC News channel in the last few days - is that the main
problem with wind and solar at the moment, is that the grid hasn't
currently got connections in the right place. In other words, there are
wind/solar farms saying "here's some cheap electricity", but the grid
hasn't got (simplifying) thick enough wires in the parts of the country
where they are, so can't connect them in.

It's adding capacity as fast as it can, but …

Ripple Energy (in whom we have put some money to launch the farm) are
currently (pun intended if you like) seeking finances from the public to
build a Solar Park in Devon - sited close to some thickish wires to handle
the energy. Please see: https://rippleenergy.com/
Ripple have already opened a wind turbine generating site and are in the
midst of building a second one sited in Wales and Scotland. The grid
connection is all part of the construction plans which start with surveying
‘suitable’ sites, feasibility studies, application for planning permission,
consultations with the Electricity Authorities, financing…
Derril Water in Devon is due to come ‘on-line’ late next summer and there
is still time to pull up your floor boards and pull the seats off the sofa
and gather up your stash of Brass Razzoos should you wish to support this
scheme.
