What do people actually know about these individuals, other than what
the gossip columns in scandal rags[1] choose to write?

[1] I'm throwing TV and other media into the same heap.

All of this isn't remotely like having a relationship with these people,
but millions seem to treat it as such.

I'm sure it's a defect in me, but the outpouring of emotion when Diana
died was beyond my comprehension.

I found it frightening. I felt it would have been dangerous to have admitted that I didn't have an overwhelming outpouring of love for the late princess and so I said nothing in public and kept my thoughts between myself and my very close friends

I usually sleep with the radio on and that morning my brain woke me up in the early hours because it had detected that the World Service had reverted to Radio 4 at the wrong time!!!

I didn't have an outpouring of love or grief. I didn't leave flowers,
but did think she got a very bad deal, do not like Charles or Camilla
and think Harry got a bad deal too.

My grandmother met the then Prince of Wales several times at Oxford: he used to pop round for supper once in a while.

That probably needs a little clarification: this was the Prince of Wales who would very briefly become Edward VIII and who was studying at Magdalen College where my great-grandfather, her father was (exact title escapes me at the moment but the person who looked after all the domestic arrangements for the resident students). Apparently our family lived a few doors away from the college and some students were sometimes invited over for supper. We used to have a few bits of inconsequential HRHPoW jewellery which, partly because of the inconsequentiality and partly because of the ordinariness of the encounters were probably not looked after carefully enough and they disappeared in one of the several burglaries my grandmother suffered in later years.
