All you really need is a very, very long piece of thin wire, a high-impedance earphone (use the tweeter from your hi-fi speaker if all else fails) and a semiconductor diode. C'mon, everybody has a spare diode lying around somewhere, don't they? Chances are that the selectivity from that set-up is going to be so rubbish that Radio 4 Long Wave will simply fall into your newly-made crystal set but, if all else fails, wrap about 40 or 50 turns of that wire around an empty loo roll and experiment a bit about where to connect the diode.

I'm fascinated by the last item in the cast list. Is this just the TA way of saying "other parts played by members of the cast" or are we going to hear a real waiter/doctor character?

I'm picturing a scene at Grey Gables where a guest falls to the floor unconscious with a roast potato stuck in their airway and the waiter steps forward. "Let me through, I'm a doctor! I only do this rubbish table-service job in the evenings because I don't earn enough to pay my rent from my day job as a hospital consultant." Then, brandishing a steak knife she performs an emergency tracheotomy and the diner's life is saved.

And luckily, RTE 1 on 252kHz stopped transmitting in April, so a 1240
foot quarter-wave long-wire antenna should work ok.

Hmm. For use in a "crystal set" ... silicon has a better curve,
generally a better diode - but does have a higher forward drop. Assuming
you have enough signal, silicon is probably better.
Unless it's a Schottky one, in which case you'd get the better of both
worlds - low forward voltage, sharp curve.
