I an a friend have just been in Elgin for a week, but as soon as one enters Invernesshire (now part of H&I) the road signs are in Pictish\\\\\\\ Scots Gaelic.. Now I have visited Wales since the days of the last KIng and know all the vocabulary of road signs (but not much more) and I have occasionally driven in Southern Iraland and have some acquaintamce with the Irish Gaelic on road signs but despite any "pan-Celtic" rhetoric the Scots Gaelic resembles neither.

Does it have a different alphabet, or at least font?

On the road signs it is the same Latin font as the Eenglish, but with grave accents on some vowels. Irish uses acute accents.

Wales had spelling reform at some point, which assists in pronunciation to
some degree, though the frequent dropping of appropriate diacritics in
online text (and road signs) doesn't help. Even so, there are differences
between North and South Wales in both spelling and vocabulary. I met a chap
from North Wales a few years back who was Welsh first language and took his
A levels in Welsh. He, and all his class, failed their biology because they
had been taught the 'wrong' vocabulary.

Ireland had _some_ spelling reform at some point and their mapping services
have been busy de-Anglicising place names for years (as OS have too - it's
a slow process).

Scotland seem to be late to this game and it should be no surprise there
are differences in spelling and vocabulary across the country.

I suppose it all comes down to migrants. There are words in Welsh which
clearly show their French roots, just as there are Norse roots showing,
mostly around the north and east coasts of Britain. The Normans were
migrants to France from Scandawegian.

My personal grouse (as I've probably mentioned before) is bilingual
temporary road signs. Too many words to take in at a glance, and no
consistency in the order the languages are shown as you move from one
county to another.

This is not limited to Welsh dialects. When youngest son was doing his
Music GCSE (ex-chorister, grade 5 theory distinction, thank you very
much) he had to be dissuaded from calling the little notes in front of a
full sized note in a score appoggiaturas or acciaccaturas, he wasn't
even permitted to call them 'grace notes'. The only acceptable answer to
get marks was 'crushed notes'. That was the point at which we lost faith
in the exam system.

Does he have to call minims, crotchets, quavers etc. quarter-, eighth-
notes? If so, I too would abandon at least that exam board.

(Grade 3 piano, by exactly the pass mark; that was more or less when I
decided it wasn't for me. I think I have the ear, but not the commitment
to practice. And my brother, mother, and father were all far better than
I, in their different styles. [And Grandma, LVCM.])

Wow! I've never met anyone who got a closer pass than the 102 I got for my
