Thank you for that link. I had never heard of these circles and clearly
they are of great interest both to asrchaologists and astronomers.

I missed a chance to find out how it is pronounced. There was a coffee stall by the car park and I asked the girl whether there was a leaflet about the site - there was not - but I failed to ask her how she pronounced the placename.

The Irish spelling is Bheitheach Mhor, meaning 'big place of birch trees'
according to several sources and 'Great Beast', according to Google
translate, which only offers a sound file for 'Great Beast' - not
helpful...

For most pronunciation questions, my go-to is Forvo.com, but it doesn't
have much Gaelic in it. This site is generally good for Irish Gaelic:
https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/beith_gheal

gives a couple of words for birch but not bheithach mhor.

Irish Gaelic grammar is impossible for us English to understand, but in some (which?) grammatical circumstances initial letters mutate. "mh" and "bh" come from m and b.

mhor <= mor meaning "large" and bheithach <= beithach, whose full meaning I do not know but whose prefix means "birch"
