Stopped by the police while on their honeymoon and find they are not
insured to drive the Riley. Jim forgot to transfer the insurance when
he gave them the car.

Or - wrinkle I hadn't thought of! - he did, but she was driving, and
he'd transferred it to "Mr. & Mrs. McCreary". Which she isn't.

*Can* you simply transfer insurance just like that? I thought you had to
get your own insurance, as individual risk factors are all different. Am
just about to renew my own and I have to confirm all sorts of details.

Can you still get "Any Driver" insurance policies? It's such a long time since I've owned a car, I really don't know what's available nowadays.

My comprehensive policy gives me legal minimum cover in any car being
driven with permission of the owner, which I would assume is quite common.

I think anyone can add anyone else to their policy (and presumably
remove themselves!), though they'd have to give all the necessary
details of the person being added - which it didn't sound like was what
happened: it just sounded like a spur-of-the-moment decision (even if he
had been _thinking_ of changing car) when theirs wouldn't go.

I think so, but much rarer nowadays. Certainly both hire companies and
the motor trade will need something of the sort.

It used to be more or less universal, and is still pretty common - but a
few (5? 10?) years ago, one or two companies _stopped_ providing it. I
remember some consumer programmes warning people about it. (IIRR "More>"
was one of those that stopped providing it, but I may be wrong about
that.) I always was surprised they _did_ do it; I suppose they'd rather
when someone has had too much to drink, say, that there is a way to get
them home. (That was the situation often suggested.)

I don't think it's the insurance they need to worry about. The licence on a
vehicle is no longer transferred to the new owner.
However, if this was a spur of the moment surprise 'gift', none of the
paperwork for transferring ownership will have been done. So it should be
regarded as a loan for this trip. Of course, for SW 'comic' purposes,
Jazzer would say 'Aye' when asked if he was the owner.

The owner is not necessarily the registered keeper though. Until Jim sends
the transfer form to the DVLA he's the registered keeper and responsible
for taxing the car (which is probably zero rated as a classic car). He'll
also be responsible for Jazzer's speeding tickets and parking fines.

Well there is no reason for it to generate more tax than before - if you
give up the vehicle you get a refund.

It was changed because of the insistence that doing it online was the
right thing to do and the equal insistence that no tax disc should be
issued for the vehicle. (They spotted that cars cannot pay tax only
owners). All done to save money by not issuing discs.

The apostrophe suggests the 01 is the shortened one, i. e. the year.
Quite why I did that I'm not sure - maybe kept it from linewrapping.

No, the Merkins say month, day, year - which I find _very_ illogical;
it's medium unit, small unit, large unit. The British way - small,
medium, large - is much more logical. The Merkin way is _just about_ OK
when the month is in letters - April 23rd. (Though it always amuses me
that they refer to their national day, our way round!)

I use what is sometimes called the ISO way - year month day (and year
always as four digits). This has the advantage of giving month and day
the way round Merkins are used to, and year coming first makes Brits
have to think about it, so realise. It also has a minor advantage that
if used at the start of filenames on computers, they automatically sort
into the right order (which either of the formats with year at the end
_don't_), although in some cases you have to include the leading 0 for
it to work.

There _are_ parts of the world - parts of the far east, I think - that
use this format anyway. (Sadly, I have also encountered year day month,
but it's rare.)
