<geek alert>
A bit pointless, but I was curious. It's got a millimiter wave radar in
it so it can tell whereabouts in a room one or more people are. When you
know this you can do eg fancy things with lighting. ALso less prone to
spiders and cats etc. for intruder detection.
It did take a lot of fiddling about and the app that it comes with is
absolutely appalling, but it does work.

To err is human. To really foul things up requires a computer and the BOFH.

"For years radios had been operated by means of pressing buttons and
turning dials; then as the technology became more sophisticated the
controls were made touch-sensitive—you merely had to brush the panels with
your fingers; now all you had to do was wave your hand in the general
direction of the components and hope. It saved a lot of muscular
expenditure, of course, but meant that you had to sit infuriatingly still
if you wanted to keep listening to the same program."

What if I want it to detect not people, but rats and raccoons?
And brand name?

Aqara FP2 - Chinese, but it can work locally without an internet connection.

Just a gimmick at the moment. But it seems to be able to reliably tell
if someone is at/near the desk, in a different part of the room, or
there's no-one in the room at all.

I've been trying (although I admit, not very hard) to get deeper
into HomeAssistant, and this is one of the sensors I keep seeing
mentioned. It would be a pricey gimmick for me too, as I don't see
a compelling need for _any_ automations yet.

Most of the automations I have are very simple. Turn one device on at
the same time as another (eg a non-Hue light at the same time as a Hue
one). Automagically setup the (very cheap) sound bar when the TV is
turned on. Make a voice announcement when the coffee machine's ready etc.

I've just bought a couple of WiFi mains adaptors[1], well one and a strip of 3.
Linked them to HA, mostly this was to get around WOL stopping working. It was
fine, moved the PC out of the spare room when we had visitors last year and then
it kept turning back on everytime I turned off. So now it turns on with the
power so I can toggle the 240 adaptor and turn on the PC remotely. I am going to
put the router / DNS server and ISP modem on the strip. I realise the router and
modem cannot be toggled without locking myself out but since they all have a
time function too I've wondered about programming a reset weekly when I am away.

[1] And a switch for the water heater but not yet fitted that. Figured I could
both use the timer and turn the water otter on when I am on my way home.
