With the Apple Silicon Mac Pro launched today that's the last of the intel
Macs gone.

Successful transition? I'd say so, although a bit slower than expected.
Didn't they say it would take a year? The low end Macs in particular are
astonishingly good machines.

Is the Mac Pro suitable for the very high end? I'm no expert but the max
RAM is much lower than the previous model. Is that a deal breaker?

three years ago at wwdc, apple said the transition would take two
years, although it wasn't clear if that was from the announcement or
from the first apple silicon mac to ship later that year.

they also said two years for the intel transition, which turned out to
be complete about 18 months after announcement and less than a year
after the first intel mac.

unlike the intel transition, the apple silicon transition began just
ahead of covid, which caused all sorts of unexpected problems, and not
just for apple either.

it's amazing that they managed to get as much done as they did,
although several macs were delayed, notably the mac pro. the m1 imac
hasn't been updated in nearly 2 years. there was a 2 year gap between
the m1 air and m2 air.

indeed they are.

no. with unified memory, less memory is needed. what matters is overall
performance and productivity, not a blind numerical comparison.
