Reddit are vastly increasing charges to use their API.

Did you notice Craig Ferenghi was a user? It appeared in one of his
demos during the WWDC keynote.

No I missed that. He’ll just have to use the official Reddit app or a
browser link like everyone else.

Yes, he mentioned it. Hopefully that wasn't coincidental. Many/most
subs are 'going dark' on the 12th for 48 hours in protest (at reddit
asking for millions in API fees). Just like Twitter, the official app
is shite - I really hope it doesn't shut up shop. Fingers crossed...

I really hope that action brings Reddit to its senses. I don’t post much
but will of course comply.

The Reddit boss is doing an AMA in r/Reddit today. Should be interesting.

Is it my imagination or are Reddit "doing a Slashdot" and trying to
"leverage the user base"? I think that some Slashdotters migrated
to comp.misc and Soylent as a result of /. commercial shenanigans.

For those of us that remember congregating on Soylent and comp.misc as
refugees from Slashdot, this is bitterly ironic. The walkout was in
2013 I believe, so a full decade.

Usenet marches on, of course. And Slashdot appears to be a wholly new
crowd.

Life goes on.

I think this is more the Musk playbook - cut off API access
(effectively, by making it far too expensive to sustain for third party
devs) to force users on to the native ad-ridden apps. Some will just
leave full stop, but many will migrate. At least Reddit has an ad-free
tier (wonder if you can do the VPN-cheap-country sign-up thing with it,
like you can with YouTube? Must find out). That said, Slashdot and
Soylent pretty much passed me by..

Many are (unsurprisingly) musing about where to go next. Mastodon of
course gets mentions, but there are also a lot of people mentioning
Lemmy <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmy_(software)>. it's on my 'to
do' list, but I haven't looked into that yet (it seems - like Mastodon
- it has a high barrier to entry... not quite as simple as 'just
signing up' like Twitter or Reddit).

Just wait. Before too long Usenet will come back into fashion and we'll
all be on the bleeding edge from the get-go.

Include me in that crowd. I’m still on Slashdot, used Digg when it got big,
tried Reddit not long after it was created but didn’t see much in it and
didn’t create an account (ironically because I thought discoverability was
terrible, something I still believe now). Created an account on Reddit during
the Digg 4 debacle. Create a Soylent News account during the Reddit Beta
debacle...

It’s just not as obvious where to go this time. I’ve just had a quick
look at Lemmy but not joined as yet - seems early days and sparse. Mastadon
looked more like Twitter to me and I’ve no interest in that kind of
interaction (might have got it wrong, but that’s my first impression).

Ho hum.

Cheers,
Ian

I do hope so, there are indeed a few signs of a Usenet renaissance.

Yes there’s a lot of good intention coming from the Big-8 board.

Have you looked at Discord? I’ve found some useful groups there, e.g. UTM.

And ironically, someone created a 'Classic Usenet' sub about a year ago
(https://old.reddit.com/r/ClassicUsenet/). Looks like a one-man mission
though - quite a few posts by the same person but little engagement.

I've joined a couple of Discords but have still to investigate
properly. One of the issues with 'where to go now' (remembering that
Reddit itself isn't closing) is that on there you have some subs
dedicated to some VERY niche subject matters/interests.

Unrelated, but is it just me that thinks the 3rd party apps (Tweetbot
and Apollo, as well as others) look and function(ed) a LOT better than
the official apps? The Twitter and Reddit apps look so... anemic -
pale/similar colouring, tiny fonts. Maybe it's an age/old eyes thing.

It’s also not really the same thing - it’s more IRCtime than anything
else. I’m on a few Discords but it’s more realtime chat.

Missed this bit - yes, they do. But then it’s almost axiomatic - if the
official app was good enough, no-one would bother developing a third party
one.

Protest gathering pace - will Reddit relent? My gut reaction is to close my
account if they don’t but as already discussed where to go in its place
with a similar format?

I doubt they will. The CEO seems like quite an arse (accused the Apollo dev
of blackmailing him). Seems to be doubling-down on his initial decision.

Old Reddit is tolerable, and I’ve heard of (but not used) RES - Reddit
Enhancement Suite. Seems to be a FF/Chrome/Edge browser extension.

Apart from that… federation seems the most suggested
(Mastodon/Kbin/Lemmy/etc). Still not got my heard around it!

Well, basically, whoever maintains the Usenet server, in that case, if you are
paying for your Usenet service, which means that is you.

Meanwhile if you got Usenet service for free, the organization that give you
free access the one that pays.

Thank you. Pretty obvious when one thinks about it!

Have you ever wondered why one does NOT have to pay to use
Eternal-September?

I don't know the exact reason for that since I am not using Eternal-September.
I chose to use paid service since I want to access the binaries.

Well, at least they give free access to text for people who want to use them
and I think that is a nice option though.
