I am reminded of the story - I don't know whether it's true or not -
about the height of Everest. Used to be that any schoolboy (nerdy one,
anyway, before that became a word) could tell you it was 29,002 feet.
The story is that when it was originally measured - quite a feat, as it
was being done from quite a distance, involving a lot of trigonometry -
it came out at exactly 29,000 - and they thought, nobody will believe
that, so they added a couple. (The chief surveyor was called Everest,
though he pronounced it eve-rest. Well before it became fashionable to
use local names for things - it does of course have one.)

Came up on QI, in the form "who first put two feet on the summit of
Everest", though I'd known the story before that.
