The fan on my macbook pro went berserk earlier - looking at "top" didn't show
very high load (single digits) - usually I would expect to see something like
"onedrive" busy doing something. The fan continued to run loudly for several
minutes as I closed various apps - and when all apps closed, it was still
running.

Shutdown & then started up again - all quiet on the western front now.

I did wonder about the CPU temp - I did a quick google and found this page

https://beebom.com/how-check-cpu-temperature-mac/

and ran the following command

~ $ sudo powermetrics --samplers smc |grep -i "CPU die temperature"
Password:
CPU die temperature: 100.61 C (fan)
CPU die temperature: 98.88 C (fan)
CPU die temperature: 98.38 C (fan)
CPU die temperature: 99.03 C (fan)
...
...

10 minutes later I ran it again

~ $ sudo powermetrics --samplers smc |grep -i "CPU die temperature"
Password:
CPU die temperature: 75.32 C

That seems high - and there's nothing really going on right now (Safari &
Usenap) - but I have never looked at this before so unsure what to expect
really.

The fan isn't audible at present.

Should I be worried?

Is that an Intel or ‘Silicon’ MBP?

Apologies - it's a 2015 model so Intel.

A sudden increase in fan speed and high CPU temperatures on your MacBook
Pro can be concerning, as it may indicate that your system is
experiencing high levels of heat and potentially straining the hardware.
While it's difficult to determine the exact cause without further
investigation, there are a few things you can consider:

1. Check for background processes: Although you mentioned that you
didn't see high CPU load in the "top" command, it's still worth checking
if any background processes are running and consuming resources. You can
use the Activity Monitor utility (located in the "Utilities" folder
within the "Applications" folder) to get a detailed overview of CPU and
memory usage.

2. Verify software and system updates: Ensure that your operating system
and applications are up to date. Sometimes, software bugs or
compatibility issues can lead to abnormal CPU usage or excessive heat
generation. Updating your software can often resolve such issues.

3. Clean the cooling system: Dust accumulation inside your MacBook Pro's
cooling system can hinder airflow and cause overheating. Cleaning the
vents and fans with compressed air or using a soft brush can help remove
any dust or debris that may be obstructing proper cooling.

4. Check for hardware issues: If the problem persists and you're still
experiencing high CPU temperatures and loud fan noise even during normal
usage, it's advisable to have your MacBook Pro checked by an authorized
service provider. They can diagnose any potential hardware problems and
perform repairs if necessary.

Keep in mind that CPUs can tolerate high temperatures, but sustained
operation near or above their maximum operating temperature can impact
performance and potentially shorten the lifespan of the hardware.
Generally, it's a good idea to monitor the CPU temperature and keep it
within acceptable limits, ideally below 90 degrees Celsius under heavy load.

If you continue to experience issues or if you're unsure about the
severity of the situation, it's recommended to consult a professional
technician who can assess your MacBook Pro and provide specific guidance
based on its condition.
