The Irish prime minister Simon Harris has asked Ireland's justice minister to bring legislation to cabinet to enable asylum seekers to be sent back to the UK.

Helen McEntee has revealed that 80% of recent arrivals to the Republic came from the UK across the Irish border.

Tensions rise as UK refuses asylum seeker returns from Ireland

Work and pensions secretary Mel Stride said he "doubted" the UK would take back any asylum seekers.

"Not least because when it comes to France, another EU country, they're not in the business of taking illegal migrants back that come here," the work and pensions secretary told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

His comments echoed those of a government source who said the UK would not accept "any asylum returns from the EU via Ireland until the EU accepts that we can send them back to France."

Classic 'one rule for us, another for everyone else' hypocrisy of Brexit Britain.

It completely undermines British insistence that France should take migrants back when we won't. IT reveals our immigration policy is based on nothing but racism.

And the cases are not necessarily similar; those making it to Ireland have claimed asylum here, those coming from France had not claimed asylum there.

I don't know what the government will do if Ireland simply grants asylum seekers rights of residency which allows them to legally return to the UK. prevents us from returning them.
