I've got an old motolugg trailer that's not been used for some years and decided to tidy it up.

First job was sorting out the wheels which weren't holding air. They're 10" wheels with tubeless tyres. The tyres look 'ok' so there's every chance the leak's either the valve or the rust around the rim/valve gives a path for the air to escape.

Anyway... I fancied cleaning them up, de-rusting and respraying; if that doesn't sort out the leak I'll worry about that in the future.

So first step, wire brush all the loose paint and rust off. Second step using an angle grinder with one of those abrasive pad things on it get the rust out and down to decent metal.

On step two I kept feeling a tickle on my right wrist (I was wearing a tshirt) and assumed I was digging bits of rust out which were hitting my wrist. Then I noticed the tickles seemed to correlate with the cable being close to my wrist...

A short visual inspection and it seems my 20+ year old angle grinder's cable has gone brittle and the tickle was the live cable er... breaking through both the outer insulation and the inner insulation and shocking my wrist.

Good job I hadn't gone full-redneck and taken to walking about with no shoes on.

I guess that's why Portble Appliance testing always starts with a
thorough visual inspection: that fault might not have shown up
electrically, though one would hope thta the insulation test would
have caught it if it were a class 1 (earthed) appliance. Might not,
though: a class 2 appliance would have no earth wire in the lead to
short to, and they cannot check between live and neutral.

Isn't there some kind of circuit breaker that should trip with that
kind of 'leakage' ?

Safety Nazi. No such gadgetery here - except on a couple of outdoor sockets.

Ha! Perhaps the next time you are drawing water from the well or
digging a new latrine you might ponder the fact that such gadgets are
actually quite useful if they prevent you from being electrocuted or
your house burning down.
We had one covering 3 groups in the old fuse box (1986) and we now have
2 for 4 groups with the swanky new setup. They tell me they will trip
before you feel anything if you touch a (bare) live wire (never tried
it mind).

Hmm... I'd wired the garage years ago (feeding it via a cable reel
which a garage consumer unit (one circuit for sockets, one for lights)
plugged into). Then when I had the electric car charger fitted we ran
a proper feed from the mains fusebox and the electrician put in a new
consumer unit which fed one socket and the car charger. I lated added
another MCB that fed the existing (old) garage consumer unit.

The 'new' garage consumer unit has an RCD on the main switch so I
should have been protected, I guess. In reality the 'tickle' was so slight
I think it was a suggestion of current rather than enough to trip an RCD.

The one I fitted at one of the houses saved the life probably of the ex when she
tried to change the oven bulb without isolating the oven and somehow got a belt
with her hand rammed into the innards.

Sounds reasonable. They are usually set to trip at 30mA within a set
period of a few hundred ms. You can feel currents way below that.

Not having fitted it would have been way cheaper than the subsequent divorce
that's for sure.
