Umrats may find this interview with Jazzer interesting, and it explains
the sudden interest, in the Horrobin family, in Larkrise to Candleford:

I'll see your "blink and you'll miss it" and raise you "see each other" twice in the
same paragraph.
“We all got together and it’s nice to see each other again,” he said.
“We sometimes don’t see each other for months, because we’r
not in the same episodes.

Yes indeed, thank you. A remarkable article.

Others have commented on "blink" and "see". I noticed their use with
interest. Is a BTN appropriate in this case, given that Ryan Kelly
himself used the expressions?

Not really; from my decades association with blind folk, these are just
part of speech. It's people unfamiliar who get all embarrassed when they
use an expression like "I see" (meaning I understand), then realise what
they've said; my friends wouldn't even notice. Ditto "see" for "meet",
as in the article.

Surely one of the mainstays of bad taste is the ability to take something
that any normal person would find innocent and ordinary and subvert it?

PS - and off at a tangent - What's this Lark Rise to Ambridge which was
mentioned in The Times? Does the fact I didn't know about it mean that
I haven't been paying enough attention, often enough? I'm going to be
away when it's broadcast so I hope it will be there waiting for me on
BBC Sounds when I come back!

I dunno, this was the first I'd heard of it but, if they're doing a TA
meets Flora Thompson mash up, that does explain why they've got the
Horrobins interested in Lark Rise.

Larks Rise is a book about life in a rural community from before the
second World War. Susan was apparently reading it, or was it Chelsea?
Apparently it has a PO worker, like Susan, who is the important centre
of the small community and so Susan likes the book. Others who saw
whoever it was reading it wanted to borrow it too. And I think there
is a radio version of it, which the actor who plays Jazzer is in.

Lark Rise to Candleford is rather earlier than before WW2, before WW1
and before the Boer War as well, in fact not that long after the
unpleasantness in the Crimea where Flo Nightingale blew away the fuzzy
wuzzies - or something like that.

(Full irony engaged).

The Post Office worker is Flora Thompson, the author, herself.
Apparently, despite having one of the very first Japanese-made
Babbage machines in her post office she could never make the
week's takings add up and after Anthony Trollope the postal
surveyor had carried out a spot check on the arithmetic, they
carted her off to debtor's prison in Oxford Town. That's why she
suddenly found that she had the time to write the book.

There's a story in Harry Thompson's excellent biography of Peter Cook, concerning early trials of a bit called "Blind" which he would do live at The Establishment club. Some people found it offensive, and an early audience member who was indeed visually impaired, approached Cook afterwards. Thompson provided this anecdote including the memorable phrase "with tears streaming from his sightless eyes, he said it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard".

Then the Post Office employed Fujitsu and over the Horizon it made
things a lot worse.
