Thanks to a recommendation via Mr. Blaney of this parish, we tried
this place:

https://goo.gl/maps/ZCf3qZ6UeWTCN3Nk7

Kantýna
Politických v??z???? 1511/5, 110 00 Nové M??sto

Sort of a cafeteria style arrangement, you saunter up to the window,
tell them what meat and side dishes you want and they put it on a tray,
and literally mark your card. Same happens at the drinks window. Also
servers will bring you more Pils as needed. 5 out of 5 stars.

I quite like Café Svatého Václava

https://goo.gl/maps/qeJQg42ZFXdDTd4r8

Sort of a bit shitty that some poor sap stands outside dressed up in
traditional warrior garb (is he meant to be Wenceslas?) but apart from
that there's often a band playing (I believe) Trad Jazz (a bit like Acker Bilk)
the beer's pretty good and the food's good. Nice and dark and cool inside, or
you can sit in the window.

Guess I've been there half a dozen times and I've always enjoyed it. Quite
fond of Prague, good architecture, fairly laid back and not too pricey. It's
got that sort of shabby chic thing going on that I quite like.

Don't think you can beat central/eastern europe really; or at least that's my
pick of the places that I've travelled to (to date).

You had me (and perhaps lost P) at Acker Bilk. Her late father[1]
was a fan of that style, and of A.B. in particular, but she's
not.

So we're definitely going.

Not chuffed about the dress-up thing either, but the rest sounds
excellent.

Thanks!

Sounds good.

I can't remember all the places we ate in Prague, but I can remember
that the various Lokál pubs were a decent bet. I think we tried two or
three in Prague, and the one in Brno.

I can probably track all the places we drank by where I've visited on
Untappd.

Yep, we went there and I found it to be very, well, cantine like, bit
low on ambience.
I liked this place:

https://goo.gl/maps/vM3C6sgL56DoVndt8

Only beer and snacks (pickled sausage or pickled cheese) but a very
pleasant location, on a river boat and nicely cool and shaded when the
rest of Prague is sweltering. Beer was excellent and the view pleasant.
I liked this place too;

https://goo.gl/maps/qK2YkTM3cmk33Ase9

Beer is next-level, didn't try the food, looked good though.

Thanks, I've added them to the list. If we have time we'll check
them out.

Had to wait under an overhang today for about 20 minutes while there
was a cloudburst of biblical proportions, with pea sized hail and
thunderclaps like the end of the world. Dropped the temperature a bit
which was welcome, but didn't do much for reducing the humidity... It's
been oppressively hot here.

Added both of them to the list. The boat looks especially good
considering how hot it has been.

Oh, we tried this place for lunch, pretty popular with the locals
and I could not fault the service or the food.

Tram system in Prague is excellent.
Over 60yrs is half price (2 quid for 24hrs)
Over 65 is free, you need the app and some ID but we never saw any
checks in 10 days.

This was the best place we found to eat and drink.
<https://www.restaurantusani.cz/>

Normal prices, rather than tourist tax prices. Meal for 2 with drinks
was less than £25 4 years ago. We had a starter which was as big as a
main course, then struggled to finish the main course.

10 minutes walk for the centre, it helped that our hotel was a little
further along that road.

Indeed it is excellent, if a bit crowded and sweaty on these hot days.
I'm gleefully riding for free and SWMBO is traveling at half price.

The 'PID' app is far superior to Munich's MVV app. You can pair a
contactless CC with your identity to get the reduced fare on the
reader in the bus/tram, but it's less faff to simply buy a 24 hr
ticket for a mere 60 CZK.

Wanted to do the funicular yesterday but didn't fancy waiting in line
in the heat. I'm going to see if there's any boats we can catch a
ride on to cool off if it's another scorcher- besides the beer boat
you already pointed to.

Thanks, looks promising and only a short ride on the #9 tram from
our very charming (and cheap!) antique apartment on Ruzova.

I'm thinking a good time to come back here would be November-January.

An ex colleague is now a walking tour guide there. Went as a contractor in the
late 80s met a local and the rest is history. L's cousin lives there we visited
a few years back, remember the beer museum
URL:http://www.praguebeermuseum.cz/en/ and buying live trout from the market,

I've only been once, mid-winter and it was pretty damn cold. I wasn't
dressed for walking, so didn't see much with just in and out of taxis.

I love it. This is why I'm here. A question about food in a place 800
miles away, and hours later, there are 18 posts.

Ah, good. I wouldn't have gone near it in the first pub, when there's so
much choice of excellent local beer.

In all likelihood, it will be warmer in Prague during any winter month
than where we live, so that's not necessarily a problem. The highlight
of P's social calendar is our outdoor patio Christmaspalooza. Dress
warmly and keep drinking.

As it happens we did the Strahov Monastery Brewery this morning,
after accidentally seeing the changing of the guard at Prague Castle
(not something I'd ordinarily seek out).

Great food and their beer is tops.

https://goo.gl/maps/3gZWa4sRLGyENT8w5

Afterwards, we headed to S.P.L.A.V. and it was quite pleasant and
cool next to the water and surprisingly not crowded. Could have stayed
all day if I'd had my druthers.

For dinner we went to Pivovar Narodni as you recommended, again,
a nice experience sitting in the garden with a bit of a breeze,
food and beer both 5x5.

Thanks to all who suggested places, just sorry we only had 3 days
here out of our nominal Munich trip. Definitely coming back to Czechia.

Oh, and the Otzi museuem in Bolzano was definitely worth the side
trip, although I'll never ever take the fucking Flixbus again in my
life so long as I still am drawing breath.

Sounds like you had a good time, did you see any water rats swimming
down the river?
Flixbus is cheap and that's it really.

No, but we did see a few people (literally) swanning about in a giant
swan-shaped pedalo.

> Flixbus is cheap and that's it really.

Don't forget nasty...

We were interrogated by both the Austrian and German border police[1]
on the way back to Munich. Bus was almost 2 hours late departing from
Bolzano, with limited and wrong updates on ETA. Hours late getting
back in the wee hours, but luckily we we already checked into our
aparthotel 2 days prior.

Didn't appreciate having to ask someone to vacate our reserved seats,
why on earth bother selling a reservation if there's no way for the
folks who didn't pay for one to know which ones are reserved?

Also the WiFi only worked very briefly at the start of both journeys,
then nothing for the rest of the way. And the power sockets, AC or
USB, never worked on either bus. Utter shit.

[1] Marched us all off the bus and had a half dozen armed police
inspecting passports and asking questions, all under the watchful
eye of another guy with a machine pistol/carbine across his chest.
