I've got one of these that's been parked up for about four years.

I start it now and again and push it around the garage, curse at it for being in the way etc.

I keep thinking 'I should sell that bike'. Then I stop and think a bit...

I don't really 'need' the capital back at the moment and were I to sell it there's
every chance I'd just waste the money on something like food and clothing.

I don't think they're fetching what they should at the moment and suspect
in a few years (5? 10?) they'll pick up in value so I'd be wrong to sell it now
when I could get more for it in the future.

Or... am I just kidding myself and is 1.5-2k about all they're ever going to
be worth?

Thoughts?

how many people are going to be collecting or riding massive things like
that in 10 years?

we are younger boomers who will be in our 70s then. I don't think there are
so many bike riders in subsequent generations and they don't have the same
attachment to buying bikes from their parents' era.

I imagine Pete F and ogden will give you the perspectives from those points
of the bike owning continuum.

Eh, what did he say?

Not exactly rare are they, so I don't see it as a 'collectors bike'.

It may have reached its value nadir but not become sought
after.Interestingly there has been a resurgence of prices in decent
Gilera Nordwests or ones suitable for restoration, but not many to be found.

A definite trend in 'more mature' riders to gravitate to something
lighter and lower.

Then anything > 25 years old seems to eventually become worth something.
Make that > 40 and the lure of no MoT or tax adds value (well until they
get wise to how long you can keep a decent SOB running and freeze that).

I dont think they will rise in value at all. Far too many GS's around.

I've been looking for another Guzzi recently, a good choice is available
for £3k, and I think they will be coming down in value, their newer
models are available secondhand and depressing the values of older
bikes, indeed, just like BMWs, why pay £2000 for a 20yo bike when a 7yo
one with better suspension and electrics is only £500 more?
Even SO British bikes are dropping in value, a 1970's Triumph Trident
was up at £4k last week, easily a £2k drop from 4 years ago.

Oh crap. I'm in the same spot. I should get rid of it. But it does have
historic value. And there are all those decals from Germany, Argentina,
etc. But it takes up so much space. Tough decision.

I think it's unlikely to become a valuable collector's item unless
it's in really nice condition. It seems to me there are some costs
associated with keeping it, even if it is SORNed, aren't there?

If there was a way for you to keep it stored for me as my Euro
Vacation Bike, that was fair to both of us, I'd be tempted to buy
it off you sight unseen. Of course registration and insurance issues
for a nonresident foreign license holder are there as well.

I suspect that's impractical and too much to ask as an obligation
if you aren't already doing something similar for a number of other
people, as Turby's guy in Germany had been doing with his 1200GS.

I thought you sold your 1200GS to someone on UKRM (Simon W?). Or have
you got another one at home. Hard to keep up with all of the various
UKRMers bike collections...

Or did you have two, one in Germany and one at home, and now only
have one??

I gave the one to Simon, then came home and a German friend asked if I
wanted his GS. He'd bought it here, rode it to Ushuaia and back, then
moved to Bali. It sat in a mutual friend's yard for years, and now it's
in my garage. I ride it maybe once a week.

Not really - the only cost is time, as it slowly dissolves through lack
of use.

There's no obligation to insure it if it's not on the road, or any
other mandatory expense.

Biggest issue is tripping over the thing in my garage to be honest.

Insurance could be sorted (I think) at a price by 'tourinsure' but road
tax would be the one and whoever holds the registration (I think) has
the obligation to pay that.

Looks a bit too prone to issues and, of course, sods law says
something terminal would happen to it if I sold it under these conditions!

Think Champ had a formula for valuation. I CBA to google it, but I'm sure it was something like

Quantity produced
x Contemporaneous interest
x Absolute age

So something uninteresting mass produced only becomes valuable after a very long time (see Model A Ford, for example).
