I have obviously pressed the wrong button. I am using T'bird and a new
display has appeared which only shows new messages, so I can't scroll
back to reply to a message I got, say, yesterday.
How do I get back my old display?

I have fiddled with the three little lines but nothing they reveal seems
to be relevant.

I suspect that what you are after is: View -> Threads -> All
