My emails have become virtually unusable and although I have soiught
help from my techy son in law, it is still not possible to read or write
emails the way I used to do.
I am using Thunderbird amnd I think I have reached the end of the line.
Can anyone suggest a program I could use instead?
I am using the Berlin Server to access umra and my broadband supplier is EE.

Mike Ruddock
PS If you don't hear from me again I hope you realise that it is not
rudeness on my part, just inability to get my kit to worl the way it should.

News posts too, I guess.

An earlier Thunderbird? Probably difficult to go back (I back up my
entire Turnpike folder once a week, but modern Thunderbird probably
doesn't lend itself to that), but hopefully techy SIL can help, if you
can convince him to let you go back. (Not sure where you'd get the
previous version, but it must be widely available and he can find it;
since TB is mostly Firefox underneath, old versions may well be
available from Mozilla itself, at least that used to be the case for
Firefox - back to very early versions, possibly even including
Netscape.)

The broadband supplier _shouldn't_ affect your news posts, though
probably will your emails assuming you're using their outgoing server
(shouldn't if you're on gmail or similar). Though Thunderbird will
affect both.

FWIW, obviously, that post appeared!

Why do these people have to tinker with what's working! They should at
least tell you there's a page where you can look at what is being
changed, especially what it may break, before accepting a change, if
there's possible breakage involved.

Why indeed!

My sister and I both had Humax PVRs with which we were highly satisfied
but then both go a second one. Probably for financial reasons, I got
the same model as my existing one but my sister decided on an "upgrade".
It's a disaster!

On mine, I view the Guide and get a small preview window of the selected
channel while I browse the list. I press a button and get a description
of whichever channel is highlighted, press a button to exit the Guide
and view that channel or to close the info pane and carry on browsing.
All very much exactly what one is likely to want to do.

On my sister's more expensive model there is no preview window(or if
there is it disappears when you browse, I forget) and having pressed a
button to get Info the only way back is to close the Guide and start all
over again. It has me cursing and ranting every time I use it and my
sister wishes she'd never bought it.

Mike

Are you on release channel 102.15.1 or 115.3.3 which is not yet "released".

If you are on the latter you ought to be able to revert by moving to
release channel.

I find turning on the menus is essential. Alt + V - Toolbars
Mail Toolbar
Menu Bar
Folder Pane Toolbar

I have been away and hope a solution has arisen in my absence.

I have the tolbars on, but the nuisance has not gone away: When I click
on my email prog there is a two minute wait until it operates, and when
I try to shift onto umra, another two minutes. Once operating no further
trouble (apart from some content being in httm or suchlike) and if I
click on it (it is always underlined) I get full clour just like a webpage.

Do you get these long delays with any other software, or just your
email-and-news client (Thunderbird I think)?

If you're getting them with other things, your hard disc is suspect (not
sure what to conclude if it's an SSD); if only the client, maybe either
the databases are too big - can you archive/rebuild/other them, or parts
of them? - or, maybe there's one rogue email/post that's causing the
problem (and I've no idea how you'd find which one it is).

To check the hard disc, run HDTune (http://www.hdtune.com/download.html
- not the Pro one at the top of the page, but version 2.55 from 2008
some way down). Run it twice. You should get a graph something like the
one at http://www.hdtune.com/, with some downward spikes caused when
your operating system interrupted the scan; if these are in the same
place on the two runs (or any are significantly wide), your HD has some
dodgy spots, and you should be considering replacing it.

Hi Mike

Hmm. A couple of suggestions

a) Under the file menu try "Compact Folders"
b) I had something similar once I moved the thunderbird profile on to my
NAS rather than being on local PC storage - it just slowed things down -
but I very much you have done that.
c) If you right click on the folder which holds umra try Properties then
"Repair Folder"
d) Also try repeating step c with your main inbox folder

These may help.

Kind regards

You will need to click on the account for this option to be available.

I am regularly prompted to compactify my folders, don't know if there's
a special option to do that (assuming Mike has not been so prompted).

Further investication reveals that under Edit -> Settings -> General
there is a box to tick that will compact folders when more than X Mb
(where X = 20 for me) can be saved with an option to ask for confirmation.

I was on the 'release channel' 102.15.1 but have now been automagically
updated to 115.3.3 without a by-your-leave.

Just like others here, I am not a fan.
However I don't use T'bird for anything other than Usenet, so there is
less to go wrong from my pov.

My current 'issue' is that I have, in Settings, selected
"Automatically mark passages as read" after 1 second (I have tried other
settings), but whatever I do it still refuses to mark anything I have
opened as read.

May or may not be relevant: I saw mention of "BetterBird" in another
'group. A quick google found https://www.betterbird.eu/ - they're rather
full of themselves, but might be worth a look for TBrats: one thing they
say (but then they would) is that they're intending to put back things
that have been in TB for some time and removed recently.

As individuals, politicians are usually quite charming, so it is quite hard to
dislike them, but in most cases, it is worth making the effort.

No, it is just the emails which have this annoying delay and display
eccentricity.
