Hello to all UMRAts. This is Stephen Bowden, apologising for being missing
in action for the last twenty years or so. I have finally got my ferrets in
a row and found a newsreader and news server combination that works for me.
Huzzah.

It looks from a read of a few score recent posts that not a huge amount has
changed here. I had picked up on the sad loss of Stephen Tilley, Robin, Sid
of course, and a few others, and I have been in virtual contact with
assorted UMRAts on other social media channels, but now that I am the
pretty much full time co-host of an Archers podcast I thought that I should
try to get my finger on the pulse of all the important parts of Archers
fandom, and UMRA is part of that.

I hope I don’t become an irritation by asking here for expertise, but I do
find myself regularly wondering things like “how old is Oliver”.

Anyway, I’m back and now just need to catch up on recent goings on in UMRA.

Welcome back Stephen, these days, I don’t listen to TA - the teenager
takeover bid saw to that - but I still pun around here. AFAIK, listening to
TA is not a requirement to contribute to UMRA - in fact, it might be an
advantage, for this reason, you’ll see very little TA related stuff from
hereabouts.

Are you the one on fb who is good at wordle? I know that's a Stephen.
I am not listening to TA at the moment as don't want to hear Blob but
catch up on the BBC sounds updates, when they update it. I stopped
last time there was the Blob story too.

Yes, that’s me. I regularly advise people who are avoiding The Archers that
the Dumteedum podcast allows listeners to keep up with what’s going on
without having any direct exposure.

Welcome back. I’m still listening, but it doesn’t hold the attention as it
once did, it’s not so much the plot lines, but the way they’re written, eg
Grey Gables. A few snags, but the whole design disregarded? As for the
Titchener plot: not sure the first part was exactly likely, the rest just
seems more TV than radio: not that I’ve ever watched a TV soap for more
than one or two epis in a decade on someone else’s goggle box to be polite,
but what trails I’ve seen elsewhere seem to be shouty, just like TA is
becoming. I don’t doubt Brat-Horrobin is a teenaged brat, just as Mia’s
another teenage eco warrior in the making, but there’s an awful lot of
teenage shouting as there is middle aged shouting.

And, no, unless someone’s got a link to info I’ve forgotten, we’ve never
been given a background to Oliver.

days. For example (not really a spoiler...) who the heck were all
those people shouting at each other on TA last night?

I stopped listening from The Fall off the House of Nigel as a protest
at populist BBC attempts to boost the flagging Archers daily ratings.
If The Man from R.A.J.A.R. had turned up on my doorstep my
pre-scripted line was going to be "I don't know what I listened to but
I can tell you that I didn't listen to The Archers."

These days I'm listening again but generally only when I'm washing-up.
And since I only wash up when I have enough dirty crockery to warrant
a bowl of ludicrously expensive hot water, that's not every day. Hence
who were all those people last night and why were they so angry?

I have been listening to your podcasts lately (though I'm a few weeks
behind).

Oliver Sterling - I think he was at least 10 years older than Caroline, she
was born in1955. Does that help?

I'll be in Cheltenham over the weekend for the annual notXmas family
gathering (a late booking after airbnb cancelled our Cannock Chase
location). I hope the weather clears up a bit by tomorrow, or I may have
trouble getting there...
Also hoping to have a wander around Leckhampton cemetery in search of
ancestors' graves. Somewhat confused by information from the cemetery
website not matching that from find a grave.

The weather tomorrow does not look great, but Sunday should be dry and even
sunny. However the recent rain has knackered the railways. I was due to go
up to That London today but the trains have all been cancelled due to
flooding at Swindon. I hope your travel works out. If you’d like to meet up
- I’m always happy to wander round a cemetery - let me know.

I'm thinking of tomorrow if I get there early, and it's not too wet.
Otherwise likely to be Monday after we've done our goodbyes, I doubt anyone
else will be interested. I can't use Messenger on my phone but could text
(or phone) if you email your number.

I think the cast should be paid 'time and a half', for any recording
session that involves shouting.
