Got to inflate Usenet figures somehow, or ther would be little to read.

It's going to be a case of Use It or Lose It

I blame those ginks/twats/wreckers in u.n.n.* groups a while back who
enthusiastically attempted to remove groups that were little used: a
recipe for the decline of the genre.

In days of yore - (yore wishful thinking?) - you had to choose which
threads to read or you'd be all day.

Collect u.r.m, u.r.m.c, u.r.s(heds), zetnet.local and you needed a
full-time secretary.

You only need three or four extra posts over the range of collected
groups now for Usenet to be 'on the up'.

Speaking as a member of the cabal^h^h^h^h^hcommittee, I think removal of
unused groups is a good idea. Someone coming into the uk hierarchy and
seeing a load of unused groups is more likely to give up than someone
coming in and seeing most groups used, so keeping dead groups, entirely
contrary to your assertion, is a recipe for the decline at least of this
part of the hierarchy.

I can see both of these points of view. I think what is needed is some
form of 'clear out' which primarily lists the currently active groups
but yet enables inactive groups to be rendered 'visible on request'.

Such a request is likely to come from two sources: Firstly from people
who have used it in the past and may want to revisit it or maybe even
revive it - though I am not suggesting that should be too easy (plus of
course as a starting point for any new users who may want to (re)create
a group that has existed in the past). Secondly, for some sort of
archival purpose.

Thinking a bit further into this, Google probably has the second part of
that already covered. So, all that is really needed is for any inactive
group names to be (optionally) shown in a group search?

I've been 'collecting' alt.beer.home-brewing in the hope of seeing some
vactivity, particularly with the price of current beer prices - hmmmmm:

can't find anymore — names mostly. I may be able to find a handful of
posts by a particular contributor while I remember there must have
been hundreds. Does anyone possess a rec.motorcycles archive?

Indeed he is, and a prize twat too. The classic was when I posted
something about Dougie Lampkin wheelieing round Pahnd Island a few years
ago and Liam said he knew nothing about motorcycle racers, to which I
replied that he was a trials rider. Liam, rather than saying "fair
enough, I didn't know that" then proceeded to try to prove that trials
riding was, in fact, a race. It was quite entertaining.
