Well just in case I think you ought to be told that you can be seen
doing your testing.

Your NNTP (network news transfer protocol) settings appear to be working.
Can't comment on your SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) settings
though.

Oh, I didn't realise that newsgroups used something different.

I've been arguing with Thunderbird (and losing, of course) for some time
now. I wanted a separate profile for umra, although I can't remember
why, and found that I could usually read umra I couldn't write to it.If
I composed a message it just hung on 'assembling the message' of summat
like that.

So I created yet another gmail account and added it to the profile.
Maybe this will last for more than a couple of weeks.

and now I'm wondering, does news.individual.net use NNTP to _upload_
messages from my laptop and should it have provided the NNTP service in
both ways? I could download messages and read them before I added a
connection to gmail but not upload them.

I think I'm right in saying that your outgoing messages go via smtp. If
you look at the bottom of the settings page for you news.individual.net
account, you'll see where it asks for the outgoing smtp server. This
should probably be the same as the one you use for your email account.

That's for replies via email. Replies to the newsgroup go via NNTP. There
isn't really a client-server relationship, it's a peer-to-peer exchange of
new messages.

IIRC, Turnpike provides for submission by email too, at least in some cases,
via usenet.org.

That's for two special cases (as well as private replies to public posts
as Jim said, which obviously go as mails):
1. moderated 'groups, where your posts have to go via a moderator;
2. mailing lists, which TP can make look like newsgroups (in particular,
you can set expiry).
