As noted in my previous post I have held the post^Hition of Bad Taste
Monitor for three years now (almost, a brief part of the first year was
covered by Brritski to whom many thanks). In that time many kind words
have been said about my tenure so I assume you're all bitching about me
in a backchannel.

The time has come, I feel, for me to pass the baton, relinquish the
heavy chains of office and return once more to the back benches. It has
been an honour to serve in His Majesty's Governm... sorry, wrong
resignation letter.

There is no clear method of choosing a BTM, it is a position that arises
like the leadership of the Conservative Party in the days before the Men
in Grey Suits were overcome with a pretence of democracy. I therefore
invite self-nominations (in keeping with the precedent of supreme
hauteur set by the late lamented BTMS).

To focus minds I have recently audited this year's accepted nominations
and to date I find that with three apiece the most prolific nominators
are Vicky and Nick which might be considered to prove their suitability
for the role.

On the other hand I did wonder about foisting it on Rosie in an effort
to encourage her to stay around.

But anyone is eligible and if there are no willing volunteers there will
have to be an umwilling one. You have been warned.

john

Obviously Nick would be excellent. I'm a touch typist currently
reduced to one hand typing which is slow, plus I can't do the
record-keepinjg software stuff you need to cope with the masses of
BTNs.

For UMRA, an umwilling one seems appropriate.

Having a dead little finger on my primary hand does reduce my typing
facility a lot more than I thought it would; I tend to only use the
index finger on that hand, and occasionally the thumb. (For those that
don't know - I have no sensation in that finger; it's obviously
receiving adequate blood supply, as it looks like its counterpart, and I
can move it no problem. It's been that way since before CoViD - they
were just beginning to seriously look into it when that stopped
everything. I've had, I think, one consultation since, and that didn't
find much. I think diabetes and a prostate scare [negative] took my
attention off it; I get no _pain_ from it, it's just inconvenient. [And
I have to remember not to burn it.])

Apropos nothing: we had a little (maybe 1/2" or less, but did actually
lie) snow here (mid-Kent) this morning. All gone except in crannies soon
after.

Obviously Vicky would be excellent. I'm an absentee umrat for a part
of the year, most years, and therefore unreliable. I too have Vicky's
record keeping problem but I would probably solve it by refusing most
of the BTN requests, however unfairly, relying on the BMS supremacy to
do so.

Besides, I enjoy seeing the funny side of the most horrible things and
would probably spontaneously combust if I were unable to express this
on umra. Would you really want this to happen?

I can sympathise as post my first Duputreyns contracture operation (to
my right hand) mine was similarly dead. I have been lucky in that the
nerve damage did repair itself over a period post-op - but it took some
months.

There is a tradition in many communities, including but not limited to
Ambridge, that a job needs doing and somebody says that if nobody else
wants to do it then they would make the sacrifice. And if anybody else
did indicate willingness to serve then they would be most indignant and
put out.

It so happens that I have discerned the will of Umrats in wishing me to
serve as BTM and therefore I am bowing to the inevitable and accepting
the position. And let that be an end of it!

Beware, though. I set a high standard of bad taste and will not be
sympathetic to Mere Vulgarity.

A more graceless and self aggrandising acceptance speech I could not
have possibly imagined. Quite appropriate for the position. A very fine
start.

I shall hand over the keys to the Bad Taste Cocktail Cabinet (contents
several bottles of that amusing liqueur that tasted so good on holiday
but has became undrinkable on the plane back to the UK) at midnight
between Christmas Eve and Day. I shall retain the BTN's staff and
regalia until the Award Ceremony is complete when I will also hand thos
over (if past performance is any guide you will need the services of a
good Dry Cleaner).

I shall then retreat to the country and keep bees. Or sheep. Or mum.
