My iMac used to be called John’s iMac. For some reason this has been changed
to John’s iMac (3).

I do have an iPad and an iPhone, but no other desktop, laptop or whatever
running MacOS.

It's of no real importance other than my whim, but can I edit it back to the
original and if so, how?

And any suggestions as to how/why it changed?

John.

Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click About
on the right and type a new name in the Name field. You may need to do a
Command + A before you enter a new name.

Sorry I didn’t actually answer your question - not properly awake yet ;)
it’s happened to be a few times but I think it might have been something to
do with rebuilding my Mac from scratch. A bit of googling may produce a
more definitive answer.

Thread from 2015. There was a long stint where everyone's Macs were
counting up in (2) (3) etc due to a not-terribly-well-written OS X
library (discoveryd) that eventually got dumped and reverted back to the
old one (mDNSresponder).

It still happens occasionally, always did - but it's rare. Just rename
and forget about it, I'd say.

Yes indeed. it's not happened here for years. It was only when John posted
that I remembered it. Not to be confused with hostname of course!!!

I take it we are talking about the computer name and not the name of the boot
volume.

I'm on Catalina, so (a) I have no sidebar and (b) I look in Sharing, not
General, for the computer name.

Yes the actual computer name and not the volume name.

The computer name is primarily relevant in a network context. That is
also why it has to be unique within the network.

And it has revealed the cause:
"You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably
Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off
Wi-Fi."

So I have turned off the WiFi. At the moment my Ethernet socket is behaving
oddly - a bit intermittent. I have no idea how to check it; my son is visiting
toorrow and he may be able to find out more. But an Ethernet/USB adaptor in a
USB socket is working fine.

And I have changed the iMac's name back. I tried that before, but it didn't
work - it was the obvious choice. Now it has.

Thank you.

John.

It happens when there is a mix-up with adresses on your local network.
When you try connect, and your router thinks there is already a computer
with the same name, it adds a (2)
The next time a (3) and so on. It can go up without limit.

No problem at all, just change it back,

Jan

Well, no, that's handled now. That thread was from 8 years ago.

> So I have turned off the WiFi.

If you have an iPhone, this'll break some handoff functionality. If you
don't, it'll mess with a few things - Find My, I think?

This would be the actual cause of the rename you first posted about.
Dropping off the network and back on while other things on the network
are still replying to the old connection that has now been reset on your
Mac's end can trigger a "whoops I must have joined a network with a
machine of the same name because I'm seeing traffic with that name on
that I didn't start, better add a (1)"

Cheers - Jaimie

Seems you are right. Althugh I have turned WiFi back on, I can no longer make
calls on my iPhone from the iMac, although Handoff is on and Facetime is set
to permit it.

I'll have to worry about that later. Visitors coming soon.
