I recall what an atrocious experience it was 15+ years ago getting a DVD onto
a Mac so that you could watch it at your leisure.

Is it any less horrible in 2023? What's your preferred toolset?

makemkv. It works very well, the only problems being that it forces you
to update once a month, and unless you pay for a license you need to
enter a new trial license key every month.

Oh it does BluRays too.

I've always found Handbrake to be the least worst, and seems to be very quick
on my 2020 Intel iMac. ISTR setting it up to rip DVDs wasn't entirely
straightforward, but plenty of guides out there.

I found MDRP does a good job. I have an older licence now, but it's
imported all my DVDs very well.

I simply created the imports to work with my Apple TV best. Using the
desktop TV app as the hub, the movies stored on an external HDD, and
streaming over my local network to my Apple TVs and devices.
