I've had to move my Usenet reading to the much-vaunted Usenapp: I had used
MT-Newswatcher since its birth, but last week my 2007 Snow Leopard 20" iMac
went POP, with a smell of burning electronics.

(I could have a go at fxing it, replacing powersupply etc. but I have to
acknowledge that it's time to move on. And anyway I do most of my work
nowadays on this much newer (but ancient) 27" Mojave iMac. I stayed with the
20" because of beloved MT-NW.)

So: I bought a licence for Usenapp, and -- well -- is there a manual,
anywhere? At all? The Usenapp website says "coming soon" .. but since the
application is now years old I don't hold out much hope.

I find I'm all at sea! For example: with MTNW, when you had read (or marked)
articles they would have disappeared from the display, next time you loaded
the group.
You could also (very valuable) Mark a whole group as read, and all 99,999
articles disappeared, so that you could take up the group again with a clean
start. No dout Usenapp can do these things, but I'm blowed if I even know
where to look (partly because the terminology is different too.

Any documentation, anywhere?

Cheers
John

Well done that man! I believe André, the developer, is working on support
documentation. You can always ask questions on the support forum or contact
André directly or even on u.c.s.m.

<https://www.usenapp.com/forum/>

<https://www.usenapp.com/contact/>

Yoiu can mark articles in a subscription as all read via the Actions menu on
the top right of the Newreader Subscriptions pane or even the All as Raed
button below it for all subs.

There are lots of us here prepared to give you the benefit of our experience.

But I agree, a manual would be VERY helpful, even to me - and I was part of
the beta testing. I tend to forget how to find things. Rules are a particular
problem.

I wonder how André is getting on with the manual? Let's go and ask him!

John.

Usenapp is indeed very good. I also used MT-NW for decades, in fact I still
have a Dual G4 PPC Mac (Mirror Drive Door Wind Tunnel) with 2GB RAM and a G5
PPC Mac with 14GB RAM. MT-NW is stunningly fast on both.

I suffered for a few months with Thunderbird before I discovered Usenapp. My
god Thunderbird is shit software. Slow, buggy and ugly.

I very occasionally, when feeling nostalgic, run MT-NW (as now!) on Mac
OS 9.1 via SheepShaver on this M1 Mac. I also sometimes run MacSOUP in a
Mojave vm on my Intel Mac.

I'm not a great fan on TB either!

Getting another one is more cost-effective.
(about 50, in these parts, including kb and mouse)

Bullshit. You are spreading FUD. TB is more functional and has much more
advanced features than all above together including asymmetric
encryption which none of the others above master, AFAIK.

In that case, why don't you post asymmetrically encrypted text here?

Except that MT-NW is WAY faster on 20 year old hardware than Bhinderturd is on
current hardware.

Which does not change the fact that Bhinderturd is slow, buggy and ugly.

FUD indeed.

You are a Troll and brain dead idiot.

Most of the users of TB use it exclusively as a mail-client.

Fact?
Are you using hardware from the 90s? On my Macs (Intel and M2) and on my
Dell/Linux TB is as fast as any other software. You are spreading FUD.

Hardware from 1984 will do, for text email and usenet,
(with clients that are not bloatware)

Alas, André says "I understand your point, but creating the manual is not a
high priority at the moment.
If you have any questions about the operation of Usenapp, you can of course
always ask them".

So I don't think we'll see Usenet manual any time soon.

My limited experience with this sort of thing is that if you don't write
something down at the outset and then build it as you go along, you're lost.

MacSoup has always had a good manual.

First: thanks for all the positive replies and encouragement, everyone!

Second: it's good to know that there is no manual yet, but everyone has
managed OK without. I am already finding that it's like a version of Colossal
Cave: don't panic, and find your _own_ way around, slowly at first; there will
be treasure in some caves, nothing in others, and the occasional goblin
lurking no doubt.

Third: I don't know whether the terminology is different to what I'm used to,
or if I was so used to doing what I did in MT-Newswatcher that I'd left all
terminology behnd, a decade or two ago! (For example I never realised that I
had 'subscriptions' to the groups I used.)

Fourth: going back to point 2 above: I find I'm already feeling more confident
about feeling my way, so thanks again for the encouragement! I've also found
that there are more useful buttons to click in the interface than I'd
realised, and I should explore these, taking the the excellent mouse-over
bubbles as my guides.

I'll go through all your responses again and see if there are any specific
questions I want to ask, so meanwhile, once again, thanks a lot!

John

What is a "folder"? This is where a manual would have been useful -- it looks
like a really dumb question, even to me.

While on the subject of servers: I use Astraweb. they have two servers:
news.astraweb and EU.astraweb. I've always used astraweb (I think because
once, in the old days, eu.astraweb looked a bit flaky.) So I have both servers
defined in my Usenapp settings. Usenapp always defaults to EU.astraweb no
matter what I do (I've swopped the order that they appear in settings, and I
always (as here) change the server I'm sending from to news.astraweb.) How
would I change the default server to be used, if I so wished?

Why would you care, as long as you get what you want?

I think it's only a 'subscription' in the sense that you've added the groups
to a list of those whose posts you want to see. Has no meaning otherwise that
I can see.

It did mislead some newbies,
who think that they have become members of a club,

On the left you can see there are folder by default

Local

The name of the server that you add on usenapp.

If you wish only to use get the index from a certain server, you can add the
group on that folder

<https://ibb.co/hfGxb6T>

By adding the group to the exact name of the server when you are subscribing.
Here, I choose Europe Newshosting.

<https://ibb.co/z7nJHdb>

If you ask why it always defaults to one of the servers when you want to add a
group, I don't know why, but I assume that the first server that you add to
use app.
