Still can’t get TM to write to my WD NAS over WiFi although it seems OK on
my smaller Sonoma test setup. WD say they don’t yet support Sonoma. Well
they’ve had enough time by now surely? Apple updated SMB in Sonoma so
maybe that’s an issue?

Has there ever been an update that didn't provide important bug fixes
and security updates?

And one that wasn't recommended for all users?

A few months ago there was an update to the iPadOS which 'provided an
important bug fix', namely:

• Pushing hands emoji does not show skin tone variations

And if that isn't an important fix I don't know what is.
