I spent a few days in Edinburgh recently and naturally visited the Apple
Store in Princes Street. Whilst there I was able to have a session on a 16”
M3 MBP and, boy, did it fly! Has anyone actually bought one of these
beasties and can relate their experiences so far? I’ve previously hinted
the machine is probably above my pay scale but I’m sorely tempted anyway.

The top of the pyramid and good for another 6-10 years.

The M3 is my local motorway. That seems justification enough...

Which model was it? The 16" M3 MacBook Pro can be 12, 14 or 16 Cores with up
to 128GB RAM.

I have the 2023 M2 model MacBook Pro with 12 Cores, 1 TB SSD and 32GB RAM. It
is plenty fast for what I do. I have Windows 11 installed in a VMWare VM and
it runs fine also. Which helps me justify the price since it is literally 2
laptops in one. :-)

It has a great screen and is very fast, but it also the best audio I have ever
heard in a laptop.

Compared to what? And what were you able to run on the display machine to
be able to say that?

I've recently moved from a base M1 to an M2 Pro and the difference wasn't
really noticeable. In contrast, the difference from my intel MBP to the M1
was huge.

Sure. That is what everyone would expect. The Silicon-Macs are a
completely different class of performance. I still use my T2-Intel MBP
alongside my mini M2pro. They are worlds apart.

You might have to wait a few years if you lived near the M25 then ;-)

The base model - 12 cores, 18GB RAM ("Unified Memory"), 512GB SSD. I'd been
using my Intel MBA in the hotel earlier so invevitably the M3 seemed much
zippier. I left M1 MBP at home but my gut feel is that the M3 has better
performance. Having had eye problems recently I also feel the need for a
larger screen size. Yes I could get an external monitor for my current laptops
but I've been informed that would only add to the household clutter!!!

I run W11 in a Parallels VM but thinking of ditching it in favour of a VM
running under UTM. It's already been pointed out that there is a 15" M2 MBA
which might be a cheaper compromise solution.

That's correct and it was also used in other MoD systems. I was attending a
CORAL 66 programming course and this, I guess, was our "bible" ....

That brings back some memories! I was once fluent in CORAL66; during my time
at ASWE it was my main programming language. It was not until we downsized to
move to a bungalow that the formal definition (along with a lot of other
stuff) finally hit the recycling bin. Sentimentality!

I kept Pascal going on my Mac until about 2004, when it became no longer
possible to run Classic applications on OSX.

Now, zilch. I never had a need to learn a successor.

Old John.

There's always Swift Playgrounds available via the App Store. I've had a play
myself but not really got very far as there's always something better to do.
(Well that's my excuse ;-) )

Other/some virtual machines are available for older OSs.

The Free Pascal Compiler, fpc, runs on macOS.
In fact, I am using it at the moment to write another Pascal compiler.

I was having a rummage on eBay buy-it-now and there have been 2Tb M1 Max
14" going for around £2000 - which is unfortunately still too much for
my current low income circumstances, but also a crazy drop from new
price.

I’ll have a look but such items must go very quickly. A bigger screen
would be better as indicated in earlier posts and a separate bigger
external monitor is also not practical at the moment.

Sorry to hear that.

What has "need" got to do with it? ["got to do with it, got to ..."
and now that tune has lodged into the wetware for a while ...]

"Want" and "shiny!" are, of course, all that matter are they not?

When I pop into my local Apple store, I play with the demonstration
M3 MAX MBP's set up on the counters. They really are nice machines.
They even have loads of ports and a lovely screen.

Going to the online store, I configured one I'd like to buy, I maxed
out the max-outable bits and she came to just shy of eight thousand
units of UKland Sterlings. That's a lot.

*WANT*!

"Need"? Bah, "need" is irrelevant. :)

>>>the 30% extra beef an M3 can provide, now is an
>>> excellent time to shop for M1 Pro and Max machines...

Nah. Not *shiny!* enough. :)

Ooooooohhhh! *shiny*. *Want!* Uhm ... well ... I don't use ebay any
more but I'm off to have a look ...

...

Ooohhh! Yes, well. That was nice and I'm rather tempted but I still
like the maxed-out M3 MBP. :)

Little child, sweety shop, funds.

A lethal combination. :)

This is going to take some thinking. I *hate* taking thinking.

Is greed, self-indulgence and sheer selfishness sufficient
justification for buying a shiny, new toy?

I know I'm bad but they are so *shiny!*

J.

Thanks for the tip - I just picked one up for a whisker over £2k. Very
pleased with it!
