Lovely sunny day, bit chilly, so layered up and went for a jaunt.
Felt good to have the breeze flowing and the limbs tingling as I pumped
the pedals for 20+ miles .... oh, hang on , wrong group :-)

Out on my new motorbike on Wednesday [1], out on my MTB yesterday at Ae
forest. -2 C on arrival at 8:30, it was brilliant. still 0 degrees when
I finished at 10:45. Dumfries & Galloway is a great area.

[1] New to me. Cagiva River, 600cc single from 2001. Similar engine to
the Pegaso?

no, the 600cc Pegaso engine was a Rotax job also used in the Funduro.

I thought it was a Rotax, well someone said it was Rotax, I havent even
looked at the engine, had it running 4 times, but not started any
servicing yet. I had most of the service parts delivered yesterday, so
will find out more when I do that this week.

I started the year as I mean to go on.
A motorcycle ride to a café.
A ride out to see "something interesting" { TOG would approve }
A curry to finish the day off.

Nah, mine are the 660, as per Tenere.
Yours will be the Rotax, same as Funduro.

But it makes me wonder about Morris dancing. There are so many other
ancient tribal/ethnic music and dance traditions that are far more
complex/creative, is there a historic reason it didn't evolve?

Splendid.

The Kabin is much frequented by the local VMCC lot.

Boxerboy of this parish used to dance with on News Year Day at the Eagle
and Spur in Cookley.

Which after having the piss taken out of the Pegs on many SA police

Music - beer - dancing. You would think it would be more popular than
it is. Maybe it's having to wear those bells. :)

But it did! - just not everywhere nor at the same pace or place. I
dance/play with a side called blackpigborder.uk which is a (welsh)
border tradition that has evolved into something much more colourful and
far reaching than border's early roots a mere couple of centuries ago.
(We have danced alongside the Severn Gilders several times at events
incidentally.)

In 2023 a book by Mike Heaney: "The Ancient English Morris Dance"
probably gives the best explanations I have ever heard of the
development of the English dance over about 6 centuries. Its a hefty
tome but fully explains how variants appeared in the north west of
England which were then transported across the pond and evolved into
'cheerleading'. Yes, really. If you want to know how the English
version has evolved that got left behind? - Then google 'fluffy morris'
(aka carnival morris).

Good plan - one which I shall try and emulate.

For my own morris dance motorcycling members, I intend to organise a
"Four Caffs" tour round the Peak District at some point. I've been
intending to do it for years but other stuff has got in the way...

Nice troll. :-)

Morris evolves like all other dance.

Here's Boss Morris being supported by a little known pop group.

Is the correct answer. Either through people writing new dances or old ones being misremembered.

Yes Pete there was Morris in Cookley on New Years Day at The Eagle and Spur - still a good pub with excellent food. Every time we took TOG there he had to have 3 pints because as far as her was concerned the third pint was free. He being used to prices in that there London.

Managed a quick 30 miles on the T7 so far this year.

With the demise of Usergroups I suppose I will have to start thinking about poking a toe through the door of the "other place" <shudders>.

I'm guessing The Old Smithy at Monyash.
The Yondermann at Wardlow Mires
Possibly The Grindleford Station at, funnily enough, Grindleford.
Struggling for the fourth - Wetton Mill maybe ?

The Peak District is about 50 miles from me, but I do tend to
spend a lot of time riding in that neck of the woods.

All those four are on my list - but they are all a bit close to each
other so I was thinking of other possibles such as the Salt Box at
Foston or the Limes near Bilsthorpe...

I probably need to go on a ride to find more, (Stoke or towards
Glossop?) then map them, then work out what is feasible to fit in with
opening times, then...

Sorry. I'm used to Latin, among others. A while ago, I was in Tahiti
when a Pacific Island Festival was happening. I've been to Hawaii and
seen hula dancing, which is interesting and fun, but the Polynesian and
other South Pacific dancers blew the hula dancers away.

The Salt Box I've been to, and Rascal's, about 500 yards up the road.
Limes is a new one to me - so that's on the list of places to head for.

There's a decent one at Glossop, with the imaginative name of
"Glossop Cafeteria"
