Have you seen the prices of new Linn turntables?

**Nope. And I don't care to. I owned an Ariston once (the same model
that Linn copied) and it was quite nice. Better than the Linn, in fact,
because it had slightly superior suspension. However, a room change and
an opportunity saw me buy a very nice Denon, which was better again.
Since I don't play LPs very often, I have a Harksound (CDC) HS910
quartz locked direct drive, which is entirely adequate now. It cost me
AUS$250.00.

Regardless, that Sony turntable advertised is a POS. My Harksound is a
vastly superior product. As would any brand new turntable selling for a
Grand.

Presumably purchased by someone who buys 'Vinyls' to put them on the wall
as art objects/trophies. Then listens to music on their phone. :-)

Many moons ago, when I could see, possibly late 70s, I was at a Hi Fi show
near Heathrow, or was it in Hammersmith, I forget, but Sony had a turntable
there which apparently had a plinth made from Granite.
I did not see many takers for it, since it was eye wateringly expensive.
Then there was the Nagaoka tone arm, made of wood that had a lot of
precision bearings so it kept the cartridge parallel over the whole disc.
Was not impressed with the stability but once again it was expensive and
had a pretty low compliance moving coil cartridge.
I got a Decca London cart once, and although it sounded great for a while,
it damaged grooves if you used it a lot. Again it was low compliance.

I do think that nowadays I'm not really too impressed with all these
surround sound amps and wireless speakers all with amps in them often. Yes
they sound impressive, but so did the original Motional feedback Philips
speakers for a while until you realised you were not really hearing better
quality, just a more impressive sound, so to speak.

I remember some Toshiba speakers which looked like globes with lots of small
speakers in them in a die cast sealed unit. They sounded pretty good, but
you needed the right room, since their sound was going in all directions and
they needed a sub to go with them to sound realistic. Again very expensive,
and I heard about 5 years later that the speaker surrounds tended to fall to
bits after a while with plastic fatigue.
